You should study for and pass the A+ exam. You will learn a ton and it will make it easier for you to get a tech support/help desk job with the certification.

If you're new to IT you may want to study using a second source also, you will understand things better when you get it from two different sources explained in different ways. The Exam Cram series is very good, and comes with a very large practice test.
