This summer I am hoping to self teach myself MATLAB programming using the software at my local university. Would anyone recommend specific books or advice on how I should approach this?

What will you be using it for?

I never had any formal training but it's pretty simple to just learn as you go for whatever project you're working on. Most of my master's courses require us to use MATLAB but you don't really need to know it ahead of time.

I'm finishing up my undergrad in Math/Stats. I'd like to add programming to my resume - thought I'd give MATLAB a try, if not that either ancient COBOL or SQL

MATLAB is really good for Math/Stats. I just finished up a Probabilistic Learning Models course and all we used was MATLAB. I'm sure there's a lot of free online tutorials although I've never tried one. Maybe someone else on here can recommend a book you could get too.

Here's one tutorial from the company that makes MATLAB: http://www.mathworks.com/academia/st...launchpad.html

Here's a guy recommending just to use the demos within MATLAB: http://programmers.stackexchange.com...o-learn-matlab
