Long term effects of reading tiny fonts? Long term effects of reading tiny fonts?

Before I ask a doctor/optometrist, I was wondering if anyone did any research on this or had anecdotes.

At 49, I still have 20/17 vision, EXCEPT for very fine print. This happened last year. Dollar store reading glasses (+2.75 or more) take care of it for the three or four times every month I need to read very small print.

Anecdotal portion: Up until that time, I was a low-light, infrequent-eye-break-taking, tiny-font-reading SOB.

My optometrist said that reading tiny print is fine. However he also said you need to take frequent breaks from staring at screens - just stare into the distance for a few seconds. Also, try not to read in low light.

Probably unrelated but I think I've developed some problems with dry eyes from being on the computer all day. Waking up in the morning and feeling your eyelids painfully drag across your eyeball is a terrible way to start the day.

This actually sounds like possibly something else - I have a condition where I sometimes sleep with an eye a little bit open. The eye dries out and sticks to the eyelid, which hurts when I open my eyes. Used to happen more when I was younger.

I think it's a combination of both. All I know is since I started religiously using eye drops last fall, I haven't woken up with painful eyes whereas it used to happen every other month or so.

Yeah when I had it a lot I used drops called "celluvisc" which I hated but worked pretty good. But in the last several years it's died down. When it first happened it was the worst - I'd wake up in the middle of the night and think I had sand in my eye, and spend an hour under the bathtub faucet trying to get it out.
