So I have an idea for a poker application but I really don't know anything about coding. Basically the program would need to go into the poker client and gather information from lobbies, and then display information that it gathered in the application and also according to filters you could select within the application. It would also need to be able to register to tournaments.

Sorry if this is not clear enough..trying not to give away the idea.

What kind of code would one need to be used for this?

No, but I'm guessing it would use the same type of code? Totally different purpose though. The registering thing would just be an extra feature and not the core purpose of the application. But it would need to operate in the same type of way which is gathering information from scanning lobbies. As far as I know there is nothing made like it right now.

What do you mean by "what kind of code"? Any major language could probably do what you want to do. Google screen scraping.

Okay, I was unaware that every language could do that. I'm new to this but a fast learner. The last time I used any code was HTML a long time ago building websites.

Still unsure where to begin to make something like I want. I don't expect to pick it up that fast or be able to make anything really good but I've wanted to learn some programming anyway so it would be a project to motivate me to keep learning.

So any suggestion which language I should start with to build something like this?

From what I've read it seems like two popular ones for web scraping are Python and Perl.

If you know nothing, you're going to have to start with the basics. Complete one of the free online cs101 classes in any language. Then google screen scraping and see if you understand any of it.
