mp3s won't work anymore on windows media player

I use windows media player to play my mp3s on my vista system.

Now it only shows red x's whenever I try to play them. It doesn't matter if they are ripped mp3s or mp3s bought from amazon.

I tried downloading winamp to play the mp3s but winamp just stalls whenever I open it.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling windows media player? This should restore anything in it that is broken.

To uninstall / reinstall, go to Control Panel, select Programs and Features, then on the left select Turn Windows Features On or Off. Under Media, untick all windows media options. Click OK and allow the program to uninstall, then reverse the process to reinstall.

Edit: Don't forget to go to Windows Update and install any updates after reinstalling any Microsoft program.

MediaMonkey (free version) is great for organizing and playing a collection of music. Easy to customize and change file names in batches, or update album art, or clear messy metadata.

media monkey is working but it had an error when it was scanning all my mp3s originally.

my only gripe about media monkey is that is plays the next song on the list 8 seconds before the song is over.

Codec issue, sounds like. Probably corrupted by some latent virus from running windows vista past its shelf life

i use media monkey but tonight when i went to use it all the mp3s of my cds are out of order for some reason. the only thing i did was turn off my computer recently and windows updated, but i cant think of why its doing this.
