U. S. Grant. It would be interesting to see first hand how someone who was so inept at virtually everything he did up to the Civil War became the general to win it. It makes almost no sense how this can happen.

This is a pre-1960s assessment of Grant. More recent scholarship, freed from the bands of Lost Cause mythology, has done much to rehabilitate the reputation of an outstanding commander who was one of the first and only generals to realize the kind of war he was fighting. The old myth goes that Grant was just a butcher who used his industrial might to bludgeon the South. I cannot see how anyone who has looked at his campaigns in the West can possibly think that is the case. Grant had a much better grasp on strategic thinking than his Confederate opponents (including Lee, by far) and almost all of his Union predecessors.

I think you miss my point. I'm not interested in discussing military strategy with Grant, plus I wouldn't understand most of it anyway. My question is how did someone who was basically a complete failure in life become the highest ranking general in the Union Army, and how did someone who couldn't make any positive life decisions manage to win essentially every battle that he participated in even when the situation, such as Shiloh, didn't look so good.

Another way of looking at this is suppose Grant was alive today. If it was before the Civil War, he would be someone who couldn't hold a job and be surviving on government welfare and other handouts, and even at times sleeping on a park bench. Yet in a little over a year, he would become one of the outstanding leaders in the country. How is this possible?
