"Promises and Betrayals, Britain and the struggle for the Holy Land "

This is a story of intrigue among rival empires; of misguided strategies; and of how conflicting promises to Arab and Jew created a legacy of bloodshed which determined the fate of the Middle East.

Both the British and Ottoman Empires once held great power, controlling many territories throughout the globe. But in the early 20th century the Ottoman Empire was in decline, and was faced with deciding who to side with during WW1. As we know, the Ottomans would go on to side with the Central Powers.

The above documentary suggests that during WW1 the British made secret post war deals with multiple groups of the ME without really thinking about the consequences of how to handle the deals after the war was over.

One thing I would like to ask is how do folks view how British diplomacy during WW1 effected the ME?

Just as some Jews think the Holocaust as a punishment from Yahweh it is possible to interpret the travails of the Arabs of the Palestine as a punishment from Allah because the Arabs fought against their Muslim overlords (the Ottoman Turks) during WWI.

Neither view is mainstream.

I hold to neither.

I posited the above to give voice to a minority view.

Fwiw the fighting that took place in and around the Holy Land during the early to mid 20th century is a bit bigger then Jew vs Muslim.

Id like to hear you say more about your previous post as well, where you compared how some Jews viewed the holocaust as punishment from God, to how Arab Muslims acted in Turkey. I would understand the comparison if you brought forth an Arab/Muslim leader who suggested that X was the will of God, but this was not the case.

It is not a view that I am especially well engaged with. I merely posited for information purposes. I am unaware just how prevalent it is amongst Arabs.

The Ottoman empire was the "sick old man of Europe" by WWI. The other empires were simply waiting to carve it up. Still, there's old power there to this day. Old power beyond political reproach and warring demagogues.
