I'm looking for something that basically describes the origins of Rome and it's rise as a power.

This book just came out: The Rise of Rome: The Making of the World's Greatest Empire, by Anthony Everitt

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss...ripbooks%2C420

I have not read this recent book linked to above but I do have Everitt's book on Cicero that was published about 9 years ago and it is excellent. It does not just give Cicero's life but gives a broad brush of the precursors and background to Roman's institutions and politics that made Cicero who he was, and also his contemporaries (both friends and foes). It was very well written and researched and I have every reason to believe that his other books are equally as good and scholarly.

Everitt has also written books on Augustus and Hadrain.

In 2012 there is that much difference in a release date in the UK? That actually surprises me.

Yeah it seems really excessive. Don't know the reason for it.

I know the economy is in a bad shape but we haven't quite turned into a 3rd world country just yet...
