Served in both World Wars.
Made multiple expeditions to the Antarctic.
Claimed to have made the first flight to the North Pole, but this claim is
shrouded in controversy.
Amassed twenty-two citations and special commendations, nine of which
were for bravery and two of which were for extraordinary heroism in saving
the lives of others.
Since his death he has been the subject of numerous conspiracy theories
involving the 'Hollow Earth' and 'Flat Earth' beliefs.
Quote:
Admiral Byrd was one of the most highly decorated officers in the history of the Navy. He is possibly the only individual to receive the Medal of Honor, Navy Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross and the Silver Life Saving Medal. He also was one of a very few individuals to receive all three Antarctic expedition medals issued for expeditions prior to the Second World War.
