amazing series of 188 photographs taken between 1887 and 1892 near Deadwood. Photographer is also the guy that took pictures of the aftermath of Wounded Knee, John C. H. Grabill.

link to all 188 photographs

i have always loved this era and i actually just got done teaching the 'American West' to my 9th graders. definitely will show them these on the smartboard tomorrow morning.

history forum is still a bit slow, maybe we can have some discussion?

Great pictures Wiper, thanks. I'm not well versed in frontier life so I won't comment on it except to say that, considering the harshness of life during that era, it always strikes me how pictures from back then always seem to carry a kind of romantic feel to them.
The one of the 3 guys panning for gold for eg, that must have been a hard way to live and make a living, but from the photo it looks almost peaceful and serene. Hard to believe it was only 120 yrs or so ago now.

problem with panning for gold was that you never found enough to do anything more than get ********* with a hooker that night and do it again tomorrow.

the pics that really got me were the mine pictures. jesus christ, lemme just wander into this hole in the side of the mountain. wonder how many sets of bones are in the sides of hills throughout the west waiting to be found.

This is great. I lived in the Black Hills near Deadwood for about 5 years. Thanks for posting this.

**** sucker! love it. So cool. So you like the show?

Deadwood and Blood Meridian two best things from this period. Probably the most accurate as well.

I only watched one Deadwood episode. It didn't so anything for me and I don't think anyone else there watched it either. It is a cool place to live for a while but it is very sleepy there and going back into decline as gambling contracts there. It was time to go.
