Discover of fire and the wheel.

Getting iron out of the ore.

Discovery of energy, electricity and electro magnetism.

This is not only crucial to modern industrialism but also a large portion of modern physics.

If you're going to include fire and the wheel, you sure as hell better include agriculture as well. With agriculture, there is no "civilization" period.

i'm a little confused by OP.

like, we could've never industrialized if it weren't for those things? well no ****!

and which IR? 1st or 2nd? because the Bessemer Process sure played a big part in the 2nd...

I just tried to create a history thread about something else than all the wars. Do it better.

Zeno, could you please change the thread name to "Key steps of industrialism"? That´s closer to what I meant. Thanks.

With the title fixed I think this thread can take new power forward. My original title was "Key points of industrialism", and that to some extent left open what I meant.

Ok, now we have, on a time scale:

Fire
Agriculture
Wheel
Iron
Steam engine
Other energy sources than wood
Electricity and electromagnetism

a lot of these aren't necessary 'industrialism', but 'civilization'

I'd say the main ones are a discovering the way to exploit a concentrated fuel source (like coal), a mechanism that converts it into power (engines), something to convert the power into work (engineering/machinery) to produce products, and the organisation of labour.

Industrialism needed enough people. Maybe it was the even more brains that really pushed things forward? And more mouths, of course

Institutional factors like banking and joint-stock companies (and later corporations with their set of legal protections) were pretty important, too. Whether they were a necessary condition is more controversial, but it's a certainty that these institutions greatly favored industrialization in Britain.
