Do you feel robbed by Spain of all the glory in the age of exploration?

Henry the navigator...

The lost opportunity to be the first to search and find the continents west of you...

It's true we were pioneer but it was inevitable other nations show the same interest as it was extremely.
We divided the world by two and I think we got the best part at the time because we got the only sea route to the east. A very important route at the time.

Re: Ask me about Portuguese history

What factors compelled Portugal to relinquish the African colonies in I believe 1975? Was this decison supported by the majority of the Portugese at home or was this a hotly debated issue? Thank you for considering my question.

basically one.

the army (with some mid-officials) started a moviment that cuminated in a revolution that overthrow out the government.

the african question was not hotly debated because there was a dictatorial regime and people were not able to speak freely, but most people (excluding the colones) share the opinion that we shoukd give independency to our colonies.

Re: Ask me about Portuguese history

Thank you. As a follow up, did the coup occur as a result of the armed forces wanting out of the colonial obligations or just a naked power grab? Also did many of the native portugese who resided in the colonies return home or did they remain in Africa?

Re: Ask me about Portuguese history

even tough they were (the army forces) somehow contaminated with comunist ideals; i would say that, for the most, it was not a naked power grab.

it was more like a desperate move to put an end to a lot of situations that were becoming unbearable.

some of the resident in the colonies run over to south africa and a few stayed there, but the most of them came back to portugal in poor conditions.

descolonization was handled very poorly and the whole country suffered from that.

Re: Ask me about Portuguese history

Why is Brazil so large?

There were loads of Spanish colonies, but they often remained isolated from metropole and each other, and they fragmented and grew in lots of directions and we end up with many nations. But only one Brazil. How did you make such a big, cohesive colony that has held together so strongly?

there are plenty of funny historical facts about our history.

top of my head comes the refusal to sponsor colombo trip to reach america.

pedro alvares cabral trying to find the maritime way to india and discovering brasil, thinking he got there.

people still waiting for the return of an young king (dom sebastião) dead in combat in north africa.

but there are plenty more weird facts. if i remember more i will add here.

Part of this has to do with the Treaty of Tordesillas and differences in administrative techniques.

major part of it was the treaty of tordesillas that estabilished that all the land outside Europe should be an exclusive duopoly between Portugal and Spain.

also in pre-colombian south america, there were more diferent cultures and peoples in the "spanish part" than in the portuguese.

in Brazil, Dom Pedro I, son of the portuguese king Dom João VI, proclaimed the country's independence in 1822 and became brazil's first emperor.

although Bolivar attempted to unify politically the spanish-speaking parts of the continent into the "Gran Colombia", they rapidly became independent states without political connections between them, despite some later attempts such as the Peruvian-Bolivian Confederation.

Re: Ask me about Portuguese history

The interesting facts in the history of Portugal I've known are
- Portugal became an independent country after a battle between a son and his mother: Battle of São Mamede in 1128
- The kings of Portugal descended from Henry I of France
- The Battle of Alcácer Quibir in 1578 was where 3 kings died: Sebastião I of Portugal and 2 sultans of Morocco. This led to the end of the House of Aviz
- The Portuguese royal family of Braganza/Bragança relocated to Brazil/Brasil to escape from the Napoleonic Wars
- Queen Maria II of Portugal and Emperor Pedro II of Brazil were siblings. Maria II was actually a Brazilian princess
