It's true we were pioneer but it was inevitable other nations show the same interest as it was extremely.

What factors compelled Portugal to relinquish the African colonies in I believe 1975? Was this decison supported by the majority of the Portugese at home or was this a hotly debated issue? Thank you for considering my question.

the army (with some mid-officials) started a moviment that cuminated in a revolution that overthrow out the government.

the african question was not hotly debated because there was a dictatorial regime and people were not able to speak freely, but most people (excluding the colones) share the opinion that we shoukd give independency to our colonies.

even tough they were (the army forces) somehow contaminated with comunist ideals; i would say that, for the most, it was not a naked power grab.

it was more like a desperate move to put an end to a lot of situations that were becoming unbearable.

some of the resident in the colonies run over to south africa and a few stayed there, but the most of them came back to portugal in poor conditions.

descolonization was handled very poorly and the whole country suffered from that.

There were loads of Spanish colonies, but they often remained isolated from metropole and each other, and they fragmented and grew in lots of directions and we end up with many nations. But only one Brazil. How did you make such a big, cohesive colony that has held together so strongly?

Part of this has to do with the Treaty of Tordesillas and differences in administrative techniques.

also in pre-colombian south america, there were more diferent cultures and peoples in the "spanish part" than in the portuguese.
