The Art of War The Art of War

Arguably one of the most influential texts ever written. Still used today in formal military schools with applications to business and intelligence.

I find the sections relating to the cost of war emotionally and financially on state still relevant today. The most recent wars waged by the U.S. seem to fall under the descriptions of poor or inadequate 'generals'.

At points the text seems cryptic and Yoda-like but has incredibly intelligent observations on how to think about strategy itself. After reading the translation it makes me want to learn Chinese to read it in the original language.

Wonderful book.

Laying plans
Waging war
Strategic attack
Tactics
Weak/Strong point
Varying tactics
Terrain
Spies
Maneuvering

I had the most wonderful teacher for this book. Military man. He was my Grandfather. Think I'll read it again to follow along. Which ones did I miss?

It is full of stuff that is now considered "introductory" or "obvious" military strategy. But at the time, this was ****ing revolutionary. A lot of people overlook, however, the deep core of Daoist (Taoist) philosophy that runs through the work. Sun Tzu was very much a believer that a general ought to be a thinker first and a warrior second.

The best warrior is never aggressive.
The best fighter is never angry.
The best tactician does not engage the enemy.
The best untilizer of people's talents places himself
below
them.

This is called the virtue of non-contention.
It is called the ability to engage peoples talents.
It is called the ultimate in merging with Heaven.

I know that many Public Relations officials study that book.

It transcends war. It's truly stunning. That book completely sinks in your head the idea that strategy is always superior to tactics. If you plan well, your battles should be won.

Amazing picture by the way. What/where/when is that thing from?

The picture is from the basic wiki on it, not sure if its a reproduction or one of the older copies, I really enjoy seeing a bamboo text. Apparently they found a really old well preserved one that showed that the current renditions are basically unchanged from ancient ones which is marvelous imo.

I have a copy and have read it (it is very short). I think it applies to poker almost 100%.

For anyone interested this is free Kindle download. If you don't have a Kindle, you can download Kindle for P.C. at Amazon, also for free.

And it is a very worthwhile read.

His point about importance of not extending your supply chain to far from home (the one about the oxen) was the first thing I thought about when I saw they invaded Iraq and said they were going to be "liberators". I absolutely knew they were going to build a massive base once they got in there.

Its moments like this where we should consider the lessons of this book. If you consider the DoJ as your enemy you shouldn't act rashly, but instead lay careful plans and study your enemy.

I'm seeing a lot of raging against the machine and would like to see more thoughtful coordinated maneuvers.

Some people are suggesting we sit and wait indefinitely, while others say we should carpetbomb offices with emails calls and letters.

I would prefer to consider carefully what, if anything, we can do as a whole effectively, and then with the leaders of the poker community execute those plans. Just my 2 cents
