looked at alot of best of LA lists right now and alot of love for albert hammonds "it never rains in southern california". used to have it on my ipod. one of those songs you love to hear if you haven't heard in a long time but get sick of really fast

hard to believe you can find a top 20 LA song list and not have "i love LA" on it. also, haven't seen counting crows "a long december" on any best lists other than my own

Also read Reyner Banham's Architecture of Four Ecologies - a must read for anyone interested in LA. Probably my favorite book about Los Angeles.

just finished reading 3 historical hollywood books:

robert wagner's recent book: "you must remember this".... mentioned it before. nice read about the places and people of golden-age hollywood. very skinny though so get from library or $0.01 plus shipping from A.com

"the man who seduced hollywood" about greg baulzer sp?... pretty good read. main character supposed to be this great guy but i thought he was basically a D-bag... what was interesting was the author separated chapters later in the book into this lawyer's major clients (howard hughes, marion davies.. can't remember the 3rd but was really really big name)... i've mentioned this in other threads, but i could read about howard hughes every single day and not get bored.

"the man who invented rock hudson".... book about big homosexual agent from 1940's and 1950's. alot about the homosexual scene in hollywood... took me awhile to get into this book and then enjoyed it thoroughly. lots of funny depraved stuff in it.

i heard an interview on the radio with the author of a new book on the water fight from 1920's (???). basis for China Town. wish i could remember the name of the key valley. i'll google it.

I'm surprised that this thread has gone over four years and over 60 posts without any mention of the works of Raymond Chandler.

He wrote six novels and over two dozen short stories during the 1940's, featuring arch-typical private eye Philip Marlow. His works include "Farewell my Lovely," "The Lady in the Lake," "The Little Sister," "The Long Goodbye," and the novella "Trouble is my Business."

All of them are all masterful classics of detective fiction written during and about the 40's and set either in LA or in thinly veiled copies of nearby towns such as "Bay City," which is a pastiche of Venice Beach and Santa Monica.

He also worked in Hollywood, where he wrote the film noir classic "Double Indemnity," among others.

Strongly recommend the book "Cadillac Desert" - about the water wars with a long section on the Owens Valley. Quick and funny read.

I loved Ellroy’s books, particularly LA Confidential. Elroy as a teen robbed houses in my old neighborhood — Hancock Park. His cadence and vocabulary are slightly odd and take some getting used to. But fifty pages in and I was hooked.

Also James Wambaugh’s The New Centurion s and The Onion Field. Wambaugh was an LA policeman for fifteen years.

Trivia: Bugliosi and my father knew one another, and I have autographed copies of a couple of his books.

What about “Ventura Highway” on the music front, or “New Kid In Town”?

I miss LA. I lived there for many years — Venice, marina del Rey, Malibu, West LA, Brentwood, Granada Hills, tujunga, la crescenta, Palms, Hollywood, Hancock Park.
