One of the best wells so far on the forum.

1. Who is your favorite fighter in the UFC's history?

2. Who is the best pound for pound right now?

3. Shocking followup question... GSP vs Silva, who wins? why?

4. Would you fight on a UFC card for free just for the trill of it? If not, how much $ would it take to get in the ring with a legit fighter?
12-22-2011 , 03:52 PM
1. Have you ever considered moving out of US to avoid paying taxes? And if you are aware how would it work exactly, if you would move to UK for example do you get off the tax leash instantly or you need to live there for certain period first/lose your US citizenship or something?

2. If you could go back in time and you know you will make $5M in next couple of years, would you give up benefits of living in US and move to tax-free country to avoid paying $2M tax?

3. Don't you think, because of the tax system, playing nosebleeds only with other pros (like it has been late years) is -EV to basically everyone? IRS is taking tons of money out of nosebleeders pocket and I as an observer don't see there are enough spots in highest games to justify playing in these games, edges are too small and variance is too big which results enormous taxes. I'm probably wrong though, care to share your thoughts about that?

what are the best types of sushi?

Thanks for doing the well, raptor.

1. How long was your longest losing streak?
2. What are the things you try to do to cope with a big downswing?
3. Whats your view on charity works? Donating money and good vs donating your time for charitable causes.

keep being awesome! Good luck with everything.

Is this an exaggeration, or have you seriously never used poker stove? If so, how many other high stakes players do you know who have never used it?

thanks for the Well, great read.

Hey

In the low-mid stakes iPoker games there are lots of nitty regs just mass tabling and splitting the fishes dead money. Do you think its possible to play a 32/28/13 vs these guys effectively if we play less tables? Suggestions on how to adjust vs these very decent regs who just don't make alot of mistakes?

1. Would you say that you are a happier person now that you are done/taking a break from playing a lot of poker? 2. Are there ever times when you're at the library or just doing some mundane life activity and you think "Man, this is not quite as exciting as being a high stakes baller." ??
Haha, yea that was me. This summer I got top 20 in like 3 tourneys, but didn’t make any final tables. My success is pretty not great thus far, but in general I feel like I play them pretty decently. Who knows.

1. Hard to say, but I think so. At least I think I am headed in the right direction for me.

2. It is definitely tough sometimes. I almost always rather be doing something other than sitting at the library studying, but I try to realize that it is MY choice to be there and that I am doing it to better myself/increase future happiness blah blah. Sometimes that helps, but I am jealous of a lot of my friends that can just pack up and go wherever whenever. I miss that a lot.

Also, I will try to keep up with this over the holidays, but I am doing a lot of travel and hanging out with family, so my hours will be limited. Feel free to keep posting up questions and I will try to get to them as soon as I can.

2. In the old partypoker days, what did you think of the players: Samolous, LOLTRICKDU, BldSwTrs. BldSwTrs always intrigued me since people said he was so difficult to understand. He also apparently never used any HEM or any other databases while playing many tables. Way ahead of the curve at the time.

3. Assuming poker gets legalized, do you think it would be wise for a 30yr old to play for a living if he can make around $100k/year. Said person has no debt, owns a condo, car, etc. I'm sure there are many other variables to take into account, but given that this individual just wants to essentially live the "retired life" and live at his leisure and travel, etc before life passes him by working a 9-5.
1. Funny, I had an sti before I got the srt8. SRT8 is fine, but it was kind of annoying to drive as the turn radius was horrible. I had to 3 point park in almost every parking spot. Super fast and pretty cool to beat m3s off the line, but I think you can do better for the price, and in general I just don’t like suvs.

2. I thought they were all very good and tough to play against. These guys were crushing 10-20 while I was still learning how to beat 3-6 and trying to break into the bigger games. I played against them only a little bit on the tail end of the ‘glory days’ before party went under. I used to watch bldswtrs play a million tables and run up some ridiculous stacks, and lolo grinded hardcore. Samo did some weirdo stuff and was really tough too.

3. I have no idea. If you are happy doing it / can do it, I see no reason why you shouldn’t if it is your best option. You certainly don’t need my permission ☺

1. I have no idea. Few hundred k, nothing ridiculous. That includes the bigger stuff when they came out, I ran pretty good in the steps.

2. Again, not really sure. There is a group of about 10-15 people that could make either of these lists. Jungleman and urnot always gave me a lot of trouble, but I never played phil z hac or tom HU.

7) Did you finish all that crown?
1. Probably like 13kish hands, I remember it was at 5-10 and I think Joe was watching a lot of it. I started off down like 20 buyins and finished off up around 10. Longest live session was probably like 24 hrs, I haven’t done anything nuts there. If I am awake for more than like 18 hours I start to feel really bad. Longest Chinese character session was probably around 8 hours with some random breaks in there. I don’t really do the sit down and grind nonstop thing, I take a lot of breaks so I stay fresh and to avoid insanity.

2. Hrm… Probably in the neighborhood of 8k, though possibly more. Some of those French tasting menus with alcohol get up there, and I usually eat a lot before those too and get a workout in so I can consume more. That said, the majority of my big calorie days probably took place in high school, I used to CRSUH food when I had to play 3-4 hours of sports and work out every day. I have eaten at least 15 in a day, possibly 20. Those are so incredibly good.

3. All the fear.

4. Obviously, you probably can now if you game select a little.

5. I dno, San Francisco maybe? Internationally a bunch of my friends live in Vancouver, so I may go there. Somewhere in China would be cool though too.

6. It likely included 2 clubs, some bad decisions, and leaving Rhino at noon the next day. These days my crazy nights involve dinner and drinks, then home in time to take my dog out.

7. No way.

great thread, thanks.
I sold my house in Vegas and am finalizing the sale of my house in Santa Fe. I didn't feel like paying mortgages and upkeep on houses that I won't likely ever go back to, and rental income wouldn't keep up with mortgage and utilities. I could sit on them for a while and hope the market turns around, but I rather just take the hit now and not have to worry about it. May or may not be the best decision, but it feels like a small weight has been lifted, so I think it is worth it. I am keeping my house in Texas (Tom owns half of it), and I am keeping my rental property in Texas (right near TCU campus, will always be occupied and it is profitable).

You mention that you lost 400k investing in RE. Since you seem to still have a very comfortable amount of cash available, why did you sell your properties and not rent them out or something while waiting for the market to rebound?

Same question about the index fund. Do you mean that you sold your positions at a significant loss or are you still in and would lose money if you got out now?

Thanks

edit: just saw Yeti's post, lol. Still interested about the index fund, though.
Yea I just answered first part replying to Yeti . As to the index fund question, I just dumped a bunch in Vanguard index funds pretty much at the peak, and they just kept taking a dump. I moved about half of what I had invested there to other stuff and what is left there has climbed back a bit.

Assuming it was legal? I would invest in a heartbeat and market the hell out of it. Online poker sites print money, and if you can get it going and it is legal, seems absurd not to. That said, I don't really want to sell my interest in the other companies, so I would sell other stuff.

Probably not very much. Rake is pretty big, and I would have to make a lot of adjustments to maximize profitability in those games. It would probably take me a few months to figure out how best to play in those games. Could probably make like 30-40k or something? I really have no idea.

Oh and thanks for helping making CardRunners what it is today too, I'm extremely proud to be a part of it these days
1. Um, I like the overall experience at Sushi Yasuda, everything I had was pretty tasty. Sasabune was also very good (both are in NYC). I feel very comfortable at naked fish’s in Vegas and have eaten there more than any other restaurant lifetime.

2. I like Sen of Japan better for overall quality of fish though, but it isn’t open at lunch and I generally eat things other than sushi for dinner in Vegas. I am sure there are some better options, but I pretty much only go at lunch and almost always to Naked Fish.

3. I have no idea, someone else should weigh in here. I use Yelp for everything I eat though and it is usually pretty accurate.

4. Probably drive, pretty horribly stupid thing to do.

5. Pretty tough to argue with Shannon Elizabeth. I only played with her once, and she played very well.

Thanks again for taking so much time to do this!
I am glad people are getting something useful out of this!

I go through phases. Sometimes i like listening to classical piano, sometimes I like listening to gangster rap. I used to listen to trance while grinding sngs. At the live table I listen to a lot of books on tape, or rap songs about winning.

1. GSP. Huge man crush.

2. GSP!

3. I think the lines would favor Silva. Pretty big weight thing to worry about and GSP isn’t very long. Would be so much fun to watch. I think gsp wins a decision or silva wins by tko.

4. Hell no. I would only take a fight where I had a reasonable chance to win (at least like 30). I wouldn’t want to show up on tv just to get my ass kicked. I am not very good, but at some point I would like to do a fair mma fight (preferably win).

1. I have considered it, but I like being an American citizen. Also, I preface this by saying that there are about a million people that could tell you more about this than me. I haven’t looked into this in like 6 years, but iirc you have to keep paying taxes for something like 7 years anyway, or else not be allowed back into the country. Doesn’t really seem worth it. I think they are aware that the only reason people would want to give up citizenship is to avoid paying taxes, so they set it up so this is very difficult. I love my family and friends, and I am happy paying taxes so I can stay here and keep them in my life. More to life than money.

2. No, see above ☺

3. If I thought it was –ev I wouldn’t play. No matter what I do for income I will have to pay tax on it. If I can make more playing poker than I can doing anything else, why wouldn’t I do it? Taxes are a part of being an American. No one likes to pay them, but it is part of living in this country and doesn't really bother me all that much.

1. I am still in it, so it will probably last for a long time. I guess I started losing in Feb and then April 15th came around to finish me off.

2. Play more and end the downswing. I dno it is just part of the game, I think I am used to it now. Can’t really do anything about it so I try to find good spots and play my best game as often as possible.

3. I think it is clear that in terms of $/hr, my time would be better spent grinding online and giving like half of what I make to charity or something. If I can make 500 an hour, it seems unlikely that I can provide 250/hr worth of benefit by volunteering my time. It probably feels better to physically get involved, but it wouldn’t be as beneficial for the world. Kinda weird way to look at it but I think it is true.

I had to google it. I would imagine a lot of people at high stakes have never used it, though I am sure we have all used something like it in the past. I think most of us understand the numbers intuitively or have used similar calculations coming up and have a good feel for how ranges work etc. Wow, I sound like a live pro or something.
