If you actually wanted to be arrested, why not lunge for your money?
01-27-2009 , 12:11 PM
I just said no when they asked if I carried more than 10. Actually not that smart huh?

Talking to a lawyer is probably a good idea but he's going to tell you the same thing the cops did: you're screwed. You're never getting that money or the watch back. This is how the war on drugs works. Is it unconstitutional? Almost certainly. Does that matter? For practical purposes, no. Count your blessings that it was just a relatively small amount this time, you got a dose of what's really going on relatively cheaply.

It's easy to find these.

For the people who think these were not DEA agents and viffer just got old-fashioned robbed, this is incredibly unlikely. He's past security at this point. Garden variety conmen aren't going to buy tickets and get inside security on the off chance they're going to run into someone like viffer.

TLDR Cliffnotes: standard.

lol pvn.

fwiw, i did have 10k confiscated at customs because i am a donk but the money was returned to me in 6 months after documenting why i had it and where it came from. and i was also similarly skeptical since i had absolutely no receipt or any knowledge of how to get it back. i'm not saying trust them, but i'm not saying it's hopeless either.

hire a lawyer ldo.

also here's a link about my ordeal:

"i went threw the extra security screening at exray, every thing was fine. i just got profiled for buying a ticket last minute for cash and the dea guys had a chip on there shoulder."

This. If you book a last minute flight always better to pay on a cc, less likely you get flagged and delayed for suspicious activity.

My friend and I traveling from Montreal to NY through Plattsburg crossing I had around $3K from the Casino buddy had like $12K that was OK to the customs guys...then they asked for a secondary search. And in that search they found the equivilant of 10 stems in a small zip lock my friend forgot about in his gym bag. They took his $12K and he spent 10 days in NY state jail for stems. He can never go back to the states again and has to get papers for Euro travel as he has been flagged in system for drug smuggling. Oh and this happened in 1998 well before 9/11.

Absolutely not true... and to all those who think it is OK to routinely fly around the country (inside the U.S.) with 10K+, viffer's experience is a word of caution...and this another: Money Laundering is a big operation in ANY country, and is very big in U.S....DEA is ALWAYS on the lookout for ANYONE with a large and unusual sum of cash in their pocket, or in their bag...if at any time you are traveling with more than a few thousand dollars and they find out about it, you are risking your money and a lot more... after confiscation, they will start an investigation...this will always stay in your 'record'...so in future travels at the airport, your name might get flagged again and again and you WILL get stopped again and again...The investigation may also trigger an IRS investigation, depending on how diligent the agents are and how far hey want to take this...

I buy tickets last minute all the time with a cc and I still get that extra security screening whenever I book within 48 hours of the flight.

Last time I brought 40K on flight. Packed it in a large manilla envolepe, and put it in my bag. Screening dudes swipe the bag but don't open shiiit inside it ime.

when we go thru customs, my girlfriend and i go up together, and i've got the 10k in my chck bag, and another like 1100 in my pocket...spending money in various random wads of 20's and 100's and 1's and 5's that like somehow made it through the week without getting spent...

we go up to the guy and hes like...so you're one of these poker kids huh?...i guess since my new carry on bag (thanks pokerstars) was less than inconspicuous...(30 other ppl in line for security also had the bag)...so anyway he's like you got any drugs, cash, insects, etc...you know the whole drill...and im like...uh cash...hes like how much...and im like 10k...and hes like u sure you got 10k...and i was like yes...i have exactly 10k cash, its in my bag, would you like to see it...hes like no that'll be just fine...you're coming with me...and i was obv like jesus christ...he had asked my gf if she had any cash...and obv she answered truthfully and said...umm like 90$...so anyway...they take us to this dark lil room where they are holding nenad medic hostage (guess he had a pokerstars bag too)...so my girlfriend and i walk in...and hes like, "they got you too?" and i was like...**** i hope not...and he laughed etc etc...so i hand my gf the wad of 1100 in my pocket...im sure its on camera from the customs inspection room, but whatev...im like, might as well try...cuz nenad informs me that they take from you anything above what you report...

so we wait there for like 45 minutes...i talk to serb a bit, and im like...dude, if we're back here much longer...we're gonna miss our flight...and hes like, "yeah, my flights at 4:15..." I look down at my watch and notice that is 4:45...what a funny guy...anyways, they come back into the room and get us separately, and they start interrogating me about how much money I have in my bag...and im like 10k...i already told the guy...this is after waiting for an hr...so im like, look in the bag, we are gonna be late for our flight, etc...but respectfully obv...so this new customs guy goes thru the routine...do you have any insects, or petri dishes, or innoculating loops, or whatever...money, cigars, etc...and im like...uhhh i got some cigars in my check bag...and hes like what kinda cigars...and i tell him that they are montecristo #2's proudly...not realizing that you can't bring back ANY cubans into the US...when i've been outta the country with my dad, he's always brough a box back...so he's like, YOU HAVE WHAT in your bag...and i was like umm..a box of montecristo's from the hotel...and the customs agent gets like offended, and i guess he decides not to go through the hassle of making them retreive my check bag, but he asks why i'd be so bold...and i was like well, the merchant at my hotel said that we were allowed to bring 1-2 boxes back into the US...and i believed him...and the guy asks, "was he wearing one of these?" and points to his US customs badge...

so anyway...he decides to be an ******* apparently and brings over some paperwork, and hes like i need you to fill this out...its the paperwork required if you bring over 10k into the US...and i was like..ummm i only have 10k, and i did that on purpose, so that I wouldnt have to fill out any paperwork...and he was like, well what if i drop a penny in your bag...and i was like...well what if i drop a $100 on the ground!?

anyways, your story is way sicker, but i figged i'd post mine too
ugh I fkn hate that airport. last year I had almost the exact same thing happen except that I caught my mistake early, and in the holding room, literally gave away a few hundred dollars because I was over the 10k mark. unfortunately, im too stupid to check every pocket and so had 10,400 dollars by the end of the search. these airport guys thought they were in some sort of movie or something, throwing me lines like, "you should have thought of that before you tried to cheat the government" when I ask them if I am going to make my flight or not. long story short, they bring in handcuffs, throw them on the table, then make me sign a declaration form for 20k (I only had 10.4) and get me on my way 2 hours after my flight has already left. clearly, I don't get a flight to St. Louis from that sh.ithole airport and spend the next 48 hours in transit to getting home. ugh that story puts me on tilt every time I think about it.

Congrats on being the exception to the rule.

Also, customs != DEA.

brought 75k back from turks & caicos, 30k in flags 45 in cash, i tried to fill out the form for the full 75, but the customs agent in miami told me that the chips didnt need to be declared, and had me fill out the form for the 45k only.

maybe it was just a rogue agent, i dunno.

This makes me pine for the days before the 4th Amendment was repealed (I am posting this from a constitutional law class, too).

Sorry about the loss viffer, at least it was only $65k. And some DEA agent scumbag gets himself a nice watch to reward himself for protecting us against those evil drugs!

the lesson is, as someone has already stated. NEVER buy plane tickets with cash, EVER. you can be sure the woman who took the money tipped off the feds. And this is pure speculation, but i wouldn't be surprised if she got a piece of that money for tipping them off. I believe there was a 60 minutes episode on this years ago. They had a producer buy a ticket with cash and the feds approached him immediately. When he said "i'm a producer for 60 minutes" they left in a cloud of dust. All you folks that vote republican can thank yourselves, this is a reagan era holdover that will never get fixed because no politician wants to be "soft on crime" You can also be sure the dea gets a piece of that money that goes towards nicer cars, conferences in hawaii etc... one of the few instances where you are guilty until proven innocent.

One time going through customs in Newark, I went through the passport check and the guy and the desk casually asked me what I did for a living. Being a noob I said that I play online poker...then he asked if I was carrying more then ten thousand dollars on me (when i had 50k euros in my bag). I told him no, that I play online poker and that's all online. He asked me one more time if I was sure and then I said yeah, kinda laughed, and said I wish I did have more than 10k on me because that'd be awesome.

He laughed and said "well let me give you one tip, whatever you do, when you go downstairs (through customs) definitely don't say you play online poker. Say you study or sell insurance or anything except that you're a gambler. It'll save you a lot of trouble."

I said ty ship I get to keep my purple euros? WP TY

So the lesson is... next time, just tell them you're with 60 minutes.
