I know the above link doesn't explicitly say per year, but unless you're granted either an extension or apply for a visa it is 6 per 12. Canada isn't Thailand. You can't do a day trip, stamp your passport and hop back into the country.
This myth seems to be common knowledge among poker players in Canada, but I can't find evidence of it being true anywhere.

My friends that have talked to immigration lawyers have reported back that you're ok as long as you never stay more than 6 months consecutively.

This is accurate.

Not sure what capacity your friends are visiting Canada so I can't comment specifically. If you're legitimately visiting and not intending to circumvent the law then you really will have no problems at all even if you're questioned because you can obviously prove your intent and the purpose of your visit(s) including the length of stay. I've said this already, but this doesn't apply for basically anyone on these forums who are obviously going to Canada to play poker and take up residence.

Obviously it's anecdotal, but I know two people that ran into serious complications that were totally unrelated to poker or any sort of work doing exactly what a lot of people are describing in this thread. Both were blatantly living in Canada, but one returned to the US frequently and the other to HK. Both of them consulted immigration lawyers after they were detained and denied entry. AFAIK one of them is still dealing with it and the other one married their fiance and ended up obtaining everything required of them to become a permanent resident. Neither one of them was working either and ran into trouble with taking up residence.

Anyway like I pointed out before, none of this is an issue until it becomes an issue so to speak. When you start having to explain your finances, your activities, your condo/car/etc. lease and what not it's really hard to say you're just in Canada visiting. I suppose if you have substantial wealth you can both afford the lawyer and the defense that you're legitimately just visiting, but I doubt that applies to most people. If you look at it from the other side and presume you're being questioned about all this already, how do you start explaining all those things and why you didn't just file for any number of travel documents for your stay? At that point you can't really say "I don't know" and hope for the best.

I went up to Canada after BF to live for a bit. I got the tourist visa and all that junk. Don't do it.

Just go up, leave after a couple weeks for a day or two. Rinse and repeat.

They honestly do not care that you are there. They just don't want you to live there permanently, steal jobs, cause trouble etc...

Have a years worth of living in your bank account with proof (pokerstar accounts work also). A house or property or business that you OWN, or wife/kids outside of Canada (bring proof). The key is have proof of strong ties outside of Canada.

They will hassle you depending on how suspicious you act I guess or just how unlucky you are. But if you are honest they will always let you in. They don't care about poker, they will care about lying.

Also I do not think they track how often we came and went. They never seemed to know.

Very interesting thread! I had also believed that we had a maximum of 6 months/year we could spend in Canada.

Does anyone know of a poker player who has successfully gained permanent residency in Canada? If there were some way to as just a poker player, I would love to do it.

Among other ways to get permanent residency without having to buy a business, etc.
