HSNL NOVEMBER **** THREAD HSNL NOVEMBER **** THREAD

when people don't like the wire i don't even try to convince them. i figure that we just have different tastes and we probably wouldnt get along.

i always get frustrated with poker players who watch it while theyre grinding. you just miss way too much and i can't imagine it being half as fulfilling as sitting down and enjoying the brilliance.

anyone else a huge fan of law and order? original > SVU > CI.

i also like the wire, curb your enthusiasm, seinfeld, lost, entourage, the office

My all time list in order is:

1. The Wire
2. The Sopranos
3. The Office
4. The Simpsons
5. Seinfeld
6. Arrested Development
7. Fresh Prince.

I know fresh prince is stupid and I hate sitcoms in general but I grew up on that show and I cant not watch it when it's on TV.

I just started watching Mad Men and it seems very well done and honest so far. After this ill prob watch 6 feet under.

Season 1 of True Blood was decent, it got way way better towards the end. I think Sookie sucks though and I hope a human that the viewers get attached to will turn into a vampire, otherwise I cant help but think the writers have no balls.

hate to be the scifi-nerd in da house since I love a lot of the series you have listed but basically nothing beats the epic storylines in Babylon 5, if you can get by the pretty bad CGI you can have some of the best character development and story lines in TV history.

sookie is basically the worst and least interesting character on the show at the moment, sadly. hopefully (expecting this to be the case) she will have some serious character development coming her way. totally agreed, and expecting, on the character you know/like turning in to a vampire thing. i don't know if it would be more interesting to see someone try to fit in like bill or go like the others. i would think that the chick with the kids would be an interesting pick, but that someone like the momma's boy character is more likely.

my top shows to recommend people would probably be:
1) wire
2) arrested development
3) buffy the vampire slayer
4) sopranos

in roughly that order. btvs petered out, as did sopranos. probably first couple seasons of sopranos > any seasons of btvs, but i think sopranos went downhill faster, so it gets bumped to 4. those all have the benefit of being completed, so you can just go get the dvds and watch them all.

i've watched most of season 1 of dexter, and enjoyed it, and maybe when i get in to season 2 i will see how they can make the viewer not get bored of "omg look at this guy fitting in even though he's so different" (i'm hoping they do, and that they develop him well).

my dvr deleted madmen =( when i had only watched first 3 episodes or so, so i can't really say anything beyond those looking pretty good.

battlestar i have found to be a good watch, with too many offensively awful episodes mixed in for my taste. the high points of the show can be very good, but it often seems like the writers don't know what they do well (a lot of things) and don't know what they do poorly (goddamn morality plays and preachy heavyhanded nonsense).
B:TVS best season was its last. for sure. i LOVED season 7.

you will like season 2 of dexter. it's just so awesome.

ive never seen battlestar galactic, i need to be conscious of not nerdifiying myself too much. that said, (and im probably the only one that loved this show) ST:V is probably my 3rd favorite TV show ever. X-files is up there too (top 5). If you guys like Joss Whedon, I recommend Firefly, there was only 1 season but it was great, not a single bad episode.

The Office is probably the best show on television right now, actually.

I was very so-so on Mad Men. I think its mostly just not my style. I love always sunny but in no way is it that good a show. I think the first 2 episodes are possibly 2 of the best stand alone comedy episodes ever, but the show really takes a nose dive from season 2 on.

I really need to recommend La Femme Nikita. The first season is fairly slow, but so many great shows seem to have a fairly slow first season. It is by the creators of 24, and is basically what that show could have been had it not been on a major network. It has tremendous character interactions and you really get to see how evil Joel Surnow and company can be. The show is extremely linear and has to be watched in order.

I watched the first episode of True Blood. How can that ever be a good show. For all intents and purposes it was Vampire Porn.. wtf

Ansky, do you like seinfeld more then curb your enthusiasm or just haven't really been exposed to it?

EVERYONE MUST WATCH THE LIFE AND TIMES OF TIM. THIS SHOW IS AMAZING.

after reading this thread i was thinking a bunch about how awesome the wire is, and i tried to decide on my favourite character. There are so many good ones that I could easily say were my favourite but I decided that I definitely think Bodie is the best character in the series. Not sure if anyone will agree with that?

As much as I love Curb, I can't possibly see how it's better than Seinfeld. Seinfeld is my 2nd favourite show of all time though, maybe I just have a thing for it, it's really in another league though imo. The Office is the only comedy that comes close to Seinfeld.

I enjoyed It's Always Sunny S1 and 2, hopefully I don't find that it goes downhill in season 3 like you say. The kids basketball episode in Season 2 was incredible.

I also wouldn't be surprised if the writers have no idea where the plot is going and are just writing it as they go along. They also make many plot lines that seem so crucial, and they either drop it or it has no significance other than to add another cliffhanger to an episode.
I agree with this, even though I love LOST. It has 4-5 good actors and the rest range from mediocre to bad. So far the first four seasons have been incredibly entertaining and I would advise everyone watching them, but it is incredibly hard for me to judge the series untill it ends because there is still a 50/50 chance it will collapse like a house of cards and make me angry that I ever invested anytime watching it. It doesn't and will never have the depth or scope of shows like The Sopranos, Wire, Shield or Mad Men, but is similarly if not more entertaining.

I mentioned this earlier and no one ever listens to me when I say this, but I would advise everyone watch Friday Night Lights. It has some mediocre plot arcs especially at the beginning of S2, but it is better written, directed and acted than any show on network TV right now (Eventhough it is no longer on network tv and is on some random Direct TV channel)

I don't think there is a more terrifying duo in television than Chris and Snoop.
yeah you took that last sentence too literally. what i meant was how she was actually from the streets of Baltimore and not just an actor pretending to be.

Ive seen every episode of seinfeld and curb atleast twice, some thrice/more (yeah im obsessed with larry david) and i think curb is better because it's more up to date (obv). you can really see how much certain things have changed in 10 years, some of the jokes in seinfeld about current trends and people are somewhat lost. also, i like that curb progresses on a season path - for the most part, every seinfeld episode is a stand alone.

also, you get more connected with the characters in CYE. after watching seinfeld, i still am unsure if i even like any of the characters. like, most of the time i dont feel anxious for george - larry, OTOH, even tho i know whats going to happen, my heart literally goes out to him.

Needless to say, I still watch it every week and enjoy it, even though I wish I was blinded to the deterioration of the show had I not read OOT. This upcoming episode should be epic with the John Q esque theme.

Even though the premise of the show is stupid and repetitive at times, House's character will never get old and I can still watch that every week and enjoy it.

Also, I watch prison break still (tears) I feel pot committed. Suggestion: Watch prison break season 1 everyone. Thats seriously one of the best shows on TV, ever! Maybe season 2 is alright but just STOP STOP STOP AFTER THAT OMG. I still force myself to watch it every week but I pray to ****ing god that they just ****ing end it soon enough with some sort of ending. Its gotten ****ing ridiculous. Season 1 was a masterpiece though.

I plan on getting the wire, complete edition, when it comes out before Xmas and hope it lives up to the twoplustwo forums praise.

those are definitely some very good arguments, I think I just feel like in Curb there are often spots in episodes where it's not funny or that funny for a few minutes at a time where as I don't find this in a single episode of Seinfeld. Curb also feels less 'polished' or something, which is possibly intentional but makes me give Seinfeld the edge. Curb def has a ton of great stuff though and I own every season on DVD and will be watching them all many times in years to come i'm sure. The restaurant swearing scene in one of the season finales killed me the first time i watched it.

Yeah I completely agree as far as your thoughts on Prison Break go.. Great first two seasons, pretty mediocore since then, but I can't stop watching for some reason, hoping they just end it sooner than later.

Also, I never really watched House until a month ago, and my suitemate just randomly set our DVR to record all new/repeat episodes, so I've been watching them in a disjointed order and it's amazing how good every episode is even without the context of season flow.

Sunny in Philadelphia has to be the funniest show running right now. I was in tears at the very last episode of this season with the "tiny boy, little boy, baby boy" lines.
