why don't more women play ONLINE poker? why don't more women play ONLINE poker?

i get the live scene since it's very male dominated and they get turned off by it. but what about online? nobody can see you, nobody knows your sex or anything about you and you can turn off chat if you don't like it. so why don't women play online as much as men? they spend a ton of money on games like candy crush so why not poker?

Do you have any links to articles or any actual numbers that show participation levels of men and women in online poker over the past decade?

Yeah, how do you know there aren't a ton more women playing online? Like you said, there's no way you'd know the difference.

I don't see anything in that article mentioning how many women do or don't play poker at all. The post begs the question - it is not established that women do not play online poker.

I would guess that if we had online players take MBTI test* we would see a lot of IxTx types. Those types are just more common among men.
* I use MBTI as a simple guideline to mental difference between genders. Im sure that there are more than 16 types of humans.
And I really dont get why someone would be scared of men. Its not like they are going to attack a female the moment she sits down.

Wait, where are we talking about women being "scared" of men?
What thread/situation are you referring to?

I read "being turned off by males in live poker" as "being scared of them".

based on people i know irl who play, on how men and women react when i tell them what i do, on this site (and other similar ones) being a huge sausage fest... i didn't find any great sources but some did say up to 50% of online players are women. if true then where are all the women pro's?

I'm in the US, play online and I'm pretty sure there aren't too many more women playing online seriously in the US. I'm in several Skype chatrooms and only one of them has one other female and she is just a very part time recreational player. I was the first, and with one short term exception, the only female my former backer had and I'm pretty sure I'm the only one my current backer has.

Off the top of my head I can think of only about 3 or 4 more serious US online female players and only a few who play a good bit but are definitely only recreational players.

I'm sure there are more than I know of but I know who most of the US regs are and almost none of them are women (3 or 4 mentioned above is all I know of).

Before Black Friday the number of women players on Stars was really growing. The women's league was great and seemed to be attracting a lot of women the site. I have no idea how's that's going now.

so why do you think that is? why so few women play and why even fewer are pro's?

I don't have any data to back this up, but my sense is that a lot of online players were not introduced to poker through online sites. Rather, they saw it on TV or in movies, or played low stakes home games with friends or family and then, as they started taking the game more seriously, started playing online. If that is the case, then perhaps fewer women play online because fewer women are getting introduced to the game in the first place?

When you find out why there aren't more female financial advisors you will find out why there aren't more female online poker pros.

I just skimmed 2 articles on the female FA issue and one said that 13% of FAs are female, while the other said 20%. About 30-40% of the FA's in my company are women, but before today I would have guessed less than 10% of FAs are female based off of the FA conferences I've been to.

Then you fail at reading comprehension.

I'll let this thread stay open for a bit more but pretty sure OP is a troll

Not really. I cant think why someone would be turned off from doing something they want to do because the field is dominated by other gender except being intimidated (fancy word for being scared) of other gender or having a huge hate for other gender (issue that needs to be dealt with by professionals). However since a lot of irrational hate comes from being scared of the thing (gender in our case) in the first place, it really takes us back to square one.
I doubt most guys in live poker are bad enough to give a female a reason to be turned off by them. And even if you come across a guy who puts females down (because his fear for females or while trying to appear cool to other guys) there are ways to deal with it - ignoring him, making a sarcastic remark about his statement, turning his mean joke on him etc, etc (if handled correctly he will eventually stop). So being turn off from live poker because of men translates into being scared of men (diction differs but content remains the same).

Yes really.
Just because I don't want to go to a smokey casino to sit at a table full of bad-smelling, ill-mannered, disrespectful men, and I'd rather be sitting
at my grind station in an ocean front villa that overlooks the Pacific while in my pajamas does not make me 'scared' of men. It makes me efficient and happy.

I assume you are a man based on your post.
This is a ladies forum. If you don't understand why women get turned off by men at the poker table, read some threads and learn.

Im a female.

Smokey casino has nothing to do with gender. Being ill-mannered, direspectful (like I said there are ways to deal with them) and bad smelling is not gender specific. Most people I have met do not meet any of those requirements. And only bad smell is something that is hard to deal with on the spot (luckily most people do shower). I rarely go to casinos but the few times I have been there I have only met nice people.

It also means that you are probably introvert. However lock a exrtavert in a room full of monitors with little to no human interaction and watch him/her go crazy. Which brings me back to the point earlier where I said that most online players are probably introverts and being a introvert is more common among men.

This makes sense!
A lot of my life has been spent inside a casino, so maybe understand that your "few times meeting nice people" isn't always how it is and that a female choosing a more desirable and less hassled work environment does not make her an introvert!

I didnt mean anything bad by "introvert" (Im one myself) but looking at my extraverted friends I cant see any of them going day to day with such little interaction. Extraverts get their energy from interaction with other people while being alone will take from their enegry. Introverts get energy from being alone while interaction with other people will take from their energy. Now if we put them in live poker introvert will lose more of his/her energy than extravert while if we put them in a online poker scene extravert will be the one lossing more energy.

For some reason being a introvert has become synonym for socially-awkward and shy which is not really always the case. Im not shy nor socially-awkward, I easiely take spotlight and interact with people if Im in a mood but 90% of time I rather take a good book or my knitting and sit alone in front of a fireplace. And I surely rather play online than live.

I'm about as extroverted as it gets and I play online. I'm in lots of Skype chatrooms and talk to other players in those all the time. You can't really make these broad generalizations.

I played in casinos, probably not as much as Katie, but I've played WSOPC events and a decent amount of live cash and for the most part I've always found it to be pleasant. I've had zero problems with the men at my tables and to be perfectly honest the women I've played with annoy me much more than any men.

If I were like Katie and could live in MX and play on Stars I'd be happy as a calm because I prefer online to live but being in the US online sucks, I do it but it sucks. I'd rather play live any day.

A lot of women don't play because they're the ones taking care of the kids while the men shirk their responsibility and do as they please. As a rule a big % of women between 25 and 45 are taking care of the house and kids and working a full time job. The husband mows the yard and works and might throw in a kids bath time or bed time story once in awhile. It's just the way it is and has always been.

One of the biggest growing demographics in online poker pre BF was women over 40. The kids are becoming self sufficient and women this age and older are finally having some time for themselves. When Stars and FTP had all those poker shows on women were seeing that and becoming interested.

Interest in poker in general has dropped significantly since BF. Many US poker rooms have closed as a result.

I think it has to do with all these things.

I don't play online because I don't trust the sites available to the US market (which is further restricted to me because of the state I'm in).

The topic is why more women dont play online (or play poker at all) so it's obv I need to make a broad generalizations because going on a case by case would mean 3.5 billion people. I just dont get whats so unlogical about what I said - generally people prefer environment/job conditions that they feel comftable with based on their personality.
Black Friday doesnt explain the same male dominated trend in Europe.

This is the problem. Just because you (limited live poker interaction/casino experience) have had good experiences thus far does not mean you can generalize everyone and every situation to fit your experience.

If you "can't think" of why someone would prefer a certain situation over another, at least be aware enough to realize that until you have been in the shoes of every single person who has had an experience different from yours, that you cannot make a generalization like this; assuming that just because you have not experienced it doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Labeling/generalizing someone as "scared" for their reasons in preferring online poker over live poker is silly and naive.

I think you have misunderstood me. I dont think someone is scared for preferring online over live. What I mean is that someone is usually scared when she would like/want to play live ( instead of online) but doesnt do so because tables are dominated by men. I just cant see why someone would not do something they want to do in order to avoid the other gender.
So the question is "do you want to play online instead of live?" If the answer is "yes" then there isnt any problem but if the answer is "no" then there might be a problem. In other words (as online player) I totally understand why you prefer to play at home so my comment was not targeted at you. Its targeted at those females who find that playing online is absolute agony but dont even dare to try playing live because of men.

I have interacted with men all my life and I doubt male live poker player is so different from average male that they become a whole new species.
