That's awesome, should definitely be a big help

Sorry that's totally random but I just constantly feel like I'm choosing between spending time with my poker friends and seeking out some sort of gay community, and if those two things could intersect, that would be really freaking cool. Don't you think? Does anyone feel this overwhelming disconnect, or is it just me? I think it's a huge part of the reason I've never felt completely 100% comfortable/myself in the poker world... I mean there are other reasons too like my politics not aligning with a lot of other people... but sexuality has a lot to do with that, and I think if there were more queer people around, it would make a big difference.
As much as I'd love to make it to Vegas for a WSOP meetup... it's unlikely to be possible for me, for this year at least.

Are there many of you guys/gals in the Vancouver BC (or even Seattle) area? I'd love to meet up for a beer or something.

Followed the link to SGT RJ's study at the bottom of today's Savage Love, and almost took it a second time. Forgot you mentioned it getting linked there. Definitely see a lot of people in the comment on AVClub mentioning that they took it. Should be good for your response rate.

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

I used to hang out in the AVClub all the time, and I did see the link in the Savage Love column today. 2600 responses so far, and I downloaded like 2200 today and started working on getting the data in shape.

Also texted Dan to say thanks. Just one tweet and a link at the bottom of his column and I'm set.

Edit: Oh no wait I'm up to 2800 responses now. I should have over 2k for the analysis easy. And my goal was 400.

Well of the original 2200, ~350 had to be dropped for various reasons, mostly incomplete data.

That's not that unusual.

Pretty sad, took me almost 2 whole minutes to get what's so funny about that name. I must be getting old.

Finished survey, let us know when results are in/paper done SGT RJ? Interesting survey setup, although minor feedback of it would be apt to ask "do you have a best friend" at a certain juncture lol.

Glad to see this thread being used again after I went on a bit of a poker hiatus

I can certainly include a link to the dissertation when it's done, and everyone could just read chapters 4 and 5 for the discussion of the findings.

For the love of God don't read the whole thing unless you need to go to sleep or something.

Sweet! haha, meh, I read econ and phil journal articles most days...once you start laughing at economist or philosopher humor you can read most anything

Replied to the other thread lol, think most ppl were just messing with you b/c they can, although there is a fair amount of grief they deserve to be given (not that you're necessarily in the position to do it on your soapbox :P , I say fascetiously).

I had an argument with a bigot at lunch on tuesday that left a bitter taste in my mouth. He was against gay marriage, I was for it. I half expected him to stop in his tracks and say 'i'm sorry, i've been playing devils' advocate, i agree with you really' but instead he continued down the same amazing lines of argument, accusing me of being a liberal (why is that something to be accused of? how is it a bad thing to be a liberal????) and - the weirdest part of the entire discussion - that two men getting married reduces the sanctity of a marriage between a man and a woman. I simply cannot get my head round this concept. By what possible mechanism could the happiness, or stability, or whatever, of a couple in one city be impinged upon by two gay people getting married elsewhere? This argument seems to be pivotal to the whole anti-gay movement, yet it seems utterly nonsensical to me. In retrospect I really regret not going on the attack more and attempting to rip his arguments to shreds but he was being belligerent and aggressive and making essentially personal attacks in the company of five other uncomfortable diners.

You can't beat stupid with intelligence.

Sometimes you just gotta drop it, and accept that not everyone is capable of understanding intelligent and logical discourse.

It doesn't just seem nonsensical - it is nonsensical.

There is still some weird paranoia among homophobes that legislating for equality means that more people will end up attracted to the same sex. I doubt they will ever understand that that isnt the way things happen.

Having been raised in a conservative religious environment, maybe I can help you understand.

There is no rationality. There is only faith. Many people who tend to fall into the category of conservatively religious just blindly believe/follow what they've been told. And they've been told over and over and over that homosexuality is a sin and vile and will result in America becoming the next Sodom and Gomorrah. Many of them truly believe that there is an agenda to to corrupt the family and marriage and this country and it starts, apparently, by allowing consenting adults make their own decisions about who they want to date and how they want to live and spend their money.

Many of them have basically been brainwashed from a very young age. The only thing you can basically do is point out their hypocrisy, stare at them in disbelief, and walk away.

Someone who holds an earnest moral belief that homosexuality is a sin simply will not be convinced, not because they are stupid, but because the acceptance of that premise taints all their later arguements/reason, from our point of view at least. If someone is biggoted and admits it there simply is no convincing them, we all have the freedom of our beliefs and convictions; although which of those the government should uphold/share is a different arguement altogether.

From what I gather, the only really effective way for a homophobe to be turned is for them to discover that someone they love and/or respect is gay. And even that's not 100%... sometimes the hate is just too overwhelming.
