Reading the women's poker tourney thread brought up something that crossed my mind when I was playing a live game earlier this week. At my table, there were three pairs of boyfriend/girlfriend (or husband/wife) making a total of four women including myself at the table which someone commented must've been a record somewhere.

I felt... I dunno, intimidated by them. After a few orbits, I could tell from their play that they weren't particularly good, but still I had a weary feeling.

Anyone else get this way?

Yes, which is really funny I think. I like playing against the type of player that I'm used to. I rarely get to play against women, so I do feel a little on edge when I'm heads up in a pot with a woman.

Like you, I'm also wary of playing against another woman and it's the reason I've tried to steer clear of the ladies' tournaments. I've been in one too many hands with another woman who has stayed in the hand with nothing (no matter how much I've bet to get them off the hand) hoping to improve on the river......and always does.....or plays 94os against my aces/kings telling me after they hit two pair that it's her son-in-laws favorite hand. I do, however, think these ladies' tournaments do serve a purpose in allowing other women to get their feet wet before jumping into the open events. And I also admit to enjoying the social aspect of playing in an all ladies' event. Having said all of that, will any of you be playing at the circuit event at Caesars Atlantic City this weekend? I'm going to play in the main event tomorrow but there's also a ladies' event on Sunday.

I don't like playing against other women that much either, particularly because ime men are typically much easier to read.

and gl Jamie!

I wish I would have seen this yesterday. I was at table 33 and got knocked out late last night. I will go back tomorrow to play in the ladies' event.

well I'm the opposite, I like it when there are a couple women at the table. It makes me a little more comfortable.

wow, I guess in a way women have instincts against eachother more than men
I get this from being at the casino.. men don't say anything, they just look at you with like wondrous or how does she play..thinking.
a woman will show how much she dislikes your appearance at the table even if you haven't done anything to her
it's really a waste of time imo

I do feel slightly odd when I have a lot of women at my table-- but I think that is largely just because it is not very common. Also, it seems like some women like to think we are automatically best friends just because we are both females at an otherwise male table, like waiting around to go to break with me, commenting on every hand I played, cheering me on a ton, etc. I don't mean to sound like oscar the grouch, lol. I have a friendly demeanor on and off the felt, but there comes a point when some women's behavior towards me crosses the line between friendly and being really awkward and distracting.

Then again, perhaps the most fun I have ever had playing live poker was when Katie75013 and I got heads up in the Borgata Nightly. The dealer and floor sub hated us and we were having so much fun. She took it down (WTG Katie ), and a Katie was guaranteed to win.

I have not played in a live ladies-only tournament, but I plan to take the plunge at the WSOP this year. Anyone played it before?

Yeah I played it 4 or 5 times, went deep twice... it has a very shallow structure which is annoying. That's also something you can take advantage of bc a lot of casual players fly or drive from out of town just for that event and would be very averse to busting in the first few hours even if stack sizes indicate it's time to gamble.

TWSS last longer? See you there!!

I played it twice, got down to 20 people the first year and lost a 40bb race :/ and last year I was about an hour from when the bubble burst. 3k chips is very short to start with, but it's definitely still a +ev tourney for any woman who plays somewhat regularly (lots of casual players there just for the experience and to have fun)

I'm cursed playing against other women. I played the Women's event in the WSOP twice. The first year it was the first WSOP event I had ever played and I was really looking forward to it. I lasted all of about 11 hands before I ran KK into AA. So I came back the next year and did the same thing on the second hand of the tournament. Fml. Will be playing it again this year so let's hope third time's a charm? I might just muck KK if it's dealt to me in the first twenty minutes.

...not really though.

Yes, I used to play there almost every day...do I know you from Borg? I just moved close to Parx casino, so I haven't been to AC in a while.

If it's a female who's totally clueless then I tend to attack her; if it's a female who's game I respect I like to steer clear. Most profitable? No. But I find there's an acknowledged comraderie amongst good female players and for the most part we're not there to take each other's money, we're there to take everybody else's. I once check raised and 3 barrell'ed a busted straight/flush draw against a female player I respected, never again. She flashed me top two and folded. I felt horrible. Stupid coming from a poker player? Yeah. But the situation arises so infrequently that I'm willing to take a little negative EV for it if it keeps me emotionally balanced.

Oh dear. That's when you nod sympathetically and mouth "good fold" as you muck face down. She probably flashed you to try and get you to flash back. She's just fishin' for info.

Mike Caro says if you feel bad about it, after the game is over, you can give the money back away from the table. At the table? Just get their dough.

Now here I was browsing the ladies' section hoping to get away from the smut of BBV, but all poker players are the same...

P.s. the smut of BBV is pretty much why I come to 2+2

Ha - I was just talking about the cards...

I think the takeaway is understanding why you play and what your utility function is. Whether we like it or not, almost every player will have something that Tilts them and it's better to recognize it so you can understand how to control it better.

On a side note - JamieAnn, don't think we were ever formally introduced at Borgata but I used to play down there quite a bit and would talk poker with an Adam G. (whom I'm pretty sure you know).

JamieAnn - this is going to sound ridiculous but I played down at Borgata every day over March-May 2009 (which is when I met Adam, I'd txt him but I lost the number when my phone went for a swim), then I was down there playing sporadically when my poker sabbatical ended. I quit my job about a year ago and moved to Vegas to play cash full time but unexpectedly have ended up back in NYC at a hedge fund.

Anyhow - the last time I was down in AC was Jan '10 and Adam and I were grabbing a bite, I think he briefly introduced us and you gave him the "wink wink nudge nudge" look as he and I headed off for food lol - but it's just funny because I have to imagine it's the same person (I do remember the name being Jamie), there just can't be that many "Jamie's" haunting the Borgata lol.

I've brought my g/f to the tables a few times and she loves playing against other women, namely because she automatically assumes they're bad.
