Don't those dogs have lots of health problems and short life expectancies because they are bred to be so large?

disclaimer: I'm always in favor of adopting a rescue pet, so I'm extremely biased against breeders.

I support expert breeders because I place a high value on having a dog that's parents I know for a fact were healthy and screened to not be carriers for things like genetic hip problems. I seek breeders who breed primarily for temperament and health (as apposed to mainly conformation breeders with which there is more concern for in-breeding).

Of course some people will call this selfish, but I see it as "voting" with my $ for animals that are well-treated their entire life, and a greater insurance that I will get to enjoy having a healthy dog for as long as possible. Having a relationship with the breeder is also nice in case any problems do arise down the road. I do respect the idea of getting rescue animals (my cat was homeless) though.

Giant breeds do have shorter life expectancies, but we can offer a great environment, and I don't see that as a reason not to own them...

No WAY!!!!!!!!!
I turtles...have always wanted one. A long time ago I went to a friend's house specifically to see his backyard that he had transformed into a turtle paradise for his 6 turtles. He had little ponds and rocks and everything miniature for them.
I def see turtle ownership in my future! Gonna hit you up for recommendations, Rupert!!!!

Well we don't know his exact birthday but I got him for my 21st and he was ~1 year old so he is now 4 and a half. We have actually only just found out that he is a he when my mum was looking after him she saw something weird came out of his tail: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VH31UcmhBIs (not very elegant). They are pretty much babies at 1. The photo of Koopa on the laptop was when he was very young! I think he is a marginated tortoise http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marginated_tortoise

That's what she said!

No sneakers sir

Notification of Koopa's official status has been made via Rupert's Facebook page. I kindly informed him that semi-regular photos and updates of our new mascot's activities are required. Pretty sure he accepted.

lol so I don't actually live much with Koopa anymore since I moved to London after the WSOP we decided it would be best if Koopa stayed at home with my parents. My mum sends me regular updates etc e.g.

wow. i <3 koopa's friendly neighborhood bird friends. i think koopa does indeed win this thread.

unless somebody has a purebred choc lab or an aredale (sp?) terrier.

my ex gf had a turtle and an adorable boxer named jax. the turtle and the boxer got along so well it was adorable. i de-friended her so i dont have pics anymore but if i did you would all die of teh cute as pez did w/ koopa.
