the language filter on 2+2 the language filter on 2+2

We all know that most swears are turned into stars (****) by the language filter on 2+2. But one word that is allowed through is "bitch". This bugs me to no end, as I find the word to be deliberately degrading and sexist, as opposed to some of the 4-letter words that can be used in a variety of non-offensive ways.

I wrote to the powers that be a couple of months ago and asked if they could change this policy. I did not hear back. I dropped the issue at the time, but I'm still tired of seeing it, just saw it again tonight in a strat thread, and well, here I am. If there are other people who feel that this word should be banned in the same way as the the F word, etc, perhaps by saying something here, we can get rid of this word (along with any other slurs based on sexuality, race, etc.).

I think this thread might be more appropriate if this was in ATF as opposed to here.

I would point out that bitch has a use where it is not an offensive term so it might be more appropriate to report posts where the word is used in an offensive manner.

I don't know what you're bitching about. I think the mods do a great job moderating these threads.

I don't know what word you are referring to, so not sure where this thread should go or if it even should exist.

maybe this video will provide a clue:

interesting...my OP has been edited to put the 5 stars in place of "'*****". I typed out the word (and it was there), also it's gone in 2nd post. But in 3rd post, the word "bitching" got through and is still there. If they changed their rules, that would be great and should be celebrated. But they made no mentin of it so color me skeptical. But if a mod simply thought he could edit a couple of posts and that would be the end of it, egads I don't even know where to go with that.

In the thread where mods asked about eliminating this subforum, people responded that TWSS is a haven from the normal environment of 2+2, and I agree. I didn't reply there cuz mods had already decided to keep TWSS so it didn't matter. The two forums I'm in the most (Home Games and LCP) have great mods and they're (usually) decent places to spend a few minutes every day hanging out. But man, popping back into this thread and seeing....something, I don't even know what...has been depressing.

And for the record, I'm a straight white man. I still find many corners of 2+2 far too...whatever...for my taste. I find the B word particularly offensive, and I'm frustrated at whatever shenanigans went on with my OP.

I know that I wouldn't waste my time replacing an offensive word with "*****" and I suspect none of the other mods would do so either. I'd just delete the offensive post.

The profanity filter is from a third party. 2+2 can add words to the list (and often does), but I suspect it is more of a matter of the third party has added the offensive word to their list. They can also remove words. The mods are discussing at the moment that one swear word in particular has been dropped.

I do agree that it is a thread more suited to the "About the forums" thread than here.

TY Venice. I'd never heard of ATF until this thread.

TY Mat for letting me know, and I'll send Mason a PM thanking him as well.

I am incredibly hesitant to ask why you object to the change, but I am willing to hear your thoughts and offer some of mine if you want them, either here or PM. I welcome a thoughtful discussion about this, though I can see the many, many ways this will go pear-shaped. I'm an oldz, clearly not cut out for 21st century internet flame wars.

Obv if you prefer not to discuss it, I'm fine with that as well, and this thread can rest in peace. TY again for listening.

i think people allow words to have too much power. but it's no big deal. not worth a long discussion. plus i was half kidding. i object to having many of the words in the filter, but not to the point where i actually argue about them with mason.

I typed the word "f*ck" (with a star in place of the "u") the other day, and it was changed to "intercourse." The sentence ended up reading "I showed him my bluff just to intercourse with him."

Why did this happen? If I had not noticed it and edited it, my post would have looked ridiculous to anyone reading it.

Oddly, when I edited it, I changed it back to "f*ck" (the same thing I had originally typed) and it did not get changed.

I'm sure someone was just messing with you because profanity filter dodging is technically against the rules, for the same reason there is a profanity filter.
