My boyfriend isn't into poker at all, however he is a very smart guy and understands most of what i explain to him about the game. The amount of variance, math, ect... He understands its a game of skill and that while playing mtts i will have many losing months.

He thinks its a pretty cool job overall, and understands how stressful it can be.

I think he is ok with it because i never let it affect me away from the table. Like when i had a -15k week i wasn't depressed or w/e when we hung out after, and it was by far my worst week ever. He is ok with listening to me talk about it and tell him about my days, whether i lost 3k or won 10k, he's glad to listen about how it went.


My family is cool with me playing poker and being gay, which is pretty awsome.

Sounds like you have a good support system. My mom doesn't love that I play poker at all...I've taught her how to play, but she sees the luck side of it more than the skill side.

yeah its sooo awesome to have family/bf support when you play, im very lucky to have both too!

lol when i first met my bf he thought it was cool that i was a poker player but he didn't really understand how i could make decent money at it, he thought it was cute but he never really took it seriously until he started seeing my results all the time. Now he totally gets the ups and downs of the game and bankroll management. Hes a super fast learner and is getting serious about playing too ;p

I taught my ex how to play poker. Well she had played a bit before. Anyway I will never forgot the pride I felt when she won a $400+ pot at a live .25/.5 game. What a champ. QQ on 77x board and 5 ppl went all in. 7 turn. none of them had it.

I saw this thread and wanted to post as well. For me, it was the opposite. I've been a recreational player for years and in the past year, was considering playing professionally. I actually met my husband playing poker last year and we were recently married. My family support has never been there for this profession, and in fact, they frown upon it. Only through my husband have I begun to learn the ups and downs of the game as well as mastering the switch from recreational play to professional play. It has not been easy, and although a fast learner, there are still many aspects that I still need to work on.

It is much easier when both are involved in the lifestyle, and the advice he provides is much easier to comprehend as I can relate personally and professionally. Not only can we discuss hand strategies and review play, but being there for each other emotionally after a rough session provides additional support. As with any job or relationship, being able to communicate helps form the foundation to allow for growth and problem resolution. So this may not just be true for dating and poker, but for all couples seeking to be successful.
