hai der! i have, at very best, basic knowledge of poker. guys have tried to explain poker to me but that has failed so far.

i thought it'd be easier to learn if i bought one of those 'poker for females' books but they're just ******ed.

so my question. do any of you know a GOOD poker book for females or other means of me learning it? i dont intend to be a professional (not that i could be one) but i'd like to know how to play it since most people around me do it.

also, it'd be fun to know how you learned it

thanks ladies!

I learned by reading HOH, and also Moshem's STT book, since I played mostly SNGs at time.

I'd personally suggest picking one specific form of poker (say, turbo SNGs for example) and focus on that solely, as opposed to playing different types of MTTs/SNGs/cash until you are comfortable with that type, then branch out.

Just my .02 cents, since I'm hardly a poker pro myself.

check out some books (2+2) dependent on whatever game you play.

read strategy specific forums as well (if you play small stakes NL, read the SSNL threads). read the stickies in each forum as well, as they'll usually contain some helpful links/articles pertaining to said limit.

most of all, try to get a poker buddy to discuss hands with. this is the best way to learn and will really help your logic when arguing different view points.

These forums are as good as any book if you know where to look, and can ask for clarifications with nearly immediate feed-back. We at SSPLO have a nice sticky at the forum lobby:

Finding someone smarter than me to talk about things is the thing that helped me most, even though it didn't seem like a lot at the time. Then get some books once you feel more confident in the basics, and then wander over and lurk the strategy forums, though they're quite helpful regardless of your skill level.

+1 to learning one thing at a time too.

I started off playing nlhe sng's and mtt's, and HOH vols 1&2 were pretty much my bible.

What really helped/helps me out is reviewing my play consistently and honestly, sometimes with a second pair of eyes that isn't afraid to tell it like it is. HOH is awesome, but I didn't become a winning player until I started reviewing my play regularly.

Videos?

I don't use them but if you're looking for a different angle I'm pretty sure there are lots of good video sites, alas you will probably have to pay.

I find the forums to be a little overwhelming with the amount of posts and threads that exist. Made, do you have a working knowledge of poker or are you more of a blank slate? If you have a working knowledge then I guess dipping into the beginner's forums is a decent idea, but if you're more of a blank slate then I suggest using something different. The only poker book I ever bought was a few years ago. Daniel Negreanu's book - Power Hold'em Strategy. Multiple poker players each write part of the book and you can flip through that particular pro's section and read what they have to say.

i am a bit baffled that you have almost 4k posts on here and still manage to ask such a broad question. would help to know what exactly you are playing (ring games or tourneys, nlhe or razz or w/e).

i doubt that there will be books that help women in particular. there are poker books for poker players. there might be books for females in particular but i would be flabbergasted if they were worth the paper they are printed on.

i don't know if tommy angelo's 'elements of poker' is on your list or shelf, but this should deffo make its way there.

apart from that i am not a huge fan of poker books anymore (i have been, when i started playing). if you want to invest into poker education that is specific for online poker and not outdated, i strongly recommend signing up for a training site like deuces cracked or similar. they all offer free trials, so if i was you i would check them all out and see which sites provides more videos for the games you are interested in specifically (game type and stakes) and how often there are new videos.

what style of learning suits one best, is different from person to person. videos work great for me.

i prefer learning stuff from books but if i could find decent videos why not imo
it doesnt necessarily have to be a diff type of material. more like different approach to poker.

this is also a problem. there is just so much to read.
i think im closer to a blank state than a working knowledge because i dont play that frequently so whatever i pick up i forget by the next time i play.
i have more time now than i used to so now is def the time to pick it up again!

this will maybe be hard to believe but that was actually my first poker related post (i mostly post in 4L)

i also left it broad because im more interested in the female aspect so i wanted to leave all options open so i dont exclude anything from the start

I'm pretty sure you won't get many people wanting your coaching if you are seriously this stupid.

I get "vibes" on whether or not another player is bluffing all the time. They just aren't in my pants.

Hi Made,
I would definitely recommend Collin Moshman's book Sit 'n Go Strategy
It is pretty much universally regarded as one of the best books written to date on sng's. And since you said you are comfortable with sng's, I would start there if I were you.

P.S. No nepotism here: one only needs to click a few links to see that I am in fact a Team Moshman member as a staked player. Regardless of this, my opinion is that the book is very good and is something I think all sng players should have in their poker library.

Agree that SNGs are a great way to start out in poker, as they were my stepping stone as well. If you want to be a tournament player there really is no better way to get into poker imo.

Thanks for all the love for my husband's book itt. <3

Ebooks type dissertations

Verneer's moving up
Fee's guide
Very Basic Guideline for Beating the Micros by MonkE
GTIE's 6max beginner's guide

Here are some threads I usually suggest for people wanting to learn.

Deuces Cracked has a free 7 day trial and there's some good foundational series like From the Ground Up, Turning the Corner, Moving on Up
