Are there any lines on the likelihood of no NFL? It sounds like the NFL is NOT likely to stop play, based on everything that is being reported. Honestly, there really is too much money flying around for them not to figure **** out, and since they've had so much growth it's likely easier to find common ground (easier to split $50 you find on the ground than renegotiate the $50 combined two people earn already).
The NBA though, man. Stern is dug into a hard line on owners bleeding money, despite record revenues, some clear profits for a lot of teams and ridiculous contracts in the off season (Darko, Outlaw, Gooden... none of these are big market teams currently).
But the players are so irresponsible with their money and images, I think a betting man would assume Stern will get some decent changes agreed to minimum.
Which is sad, I never hear them considering opening up the max salaries. Why is it good for the game that Amare or Dirk or Kobe or Garnett can make 20+ mil in a season but Lebron, Wade and Bosh can only max out at 16-17 mil starting salary? A guy like Lebron would get paid 30 mil if they allowed it, so why cut it short yet allow worse, veteran players to make more money? All the "paying your dues" stuff seems silly to me, this is entertainment, you may be good for two years then you're done.
I also like the idea of shorter contracts. Teams getting killed by an Arenas, Lewis, Carter (wow, we may be figuring our the Orlando Magic's problem here!) Roy or Amare (I'm leaving this here, I'm convinced he won't live up to that contract) don't really make things any more interesting. 3 year contracts sound good to me. That way the worst you can get is a Turkoglu, a guy that destroys himself in a contract year, then hobbles around complaining at every corner. -30 mil over 3 years is better than -60 mil over 5-6 years though. For the good of the game!
Rookie contracts also place too much weight on where you were drafted imo. I'm not sure of a good solution to this one off hand, but it's silly to me that a guy drafted 16 makes more money than a guy drafted 28, even if the 28th pick outperforms the 16th pick largely in his first two years. I'm not sure arbitration is the answer like in baseball. Players switching teams every other day and one team spending twice as much as most teams are two major turn offs to me in baseball. I used to think it was the luck filled playoff structure, but honestly football is probably more so luck (right?) and I enjoy NFL playoffs.
