I dont think it's an issue of women not having the capacity to be good at poker in the same way as men, it's more of an issue of garnering enough interest in the first place to actually work at it. Women are more inclined to professions involving more creativity/artistry in general (i was a musical theater major) and a lot of girls can't possibly fathom how there can be creativity, talent, etc in something where you look at a screen with fake cards and click buttons.
For me i was just really attracted to the way that I felt like I was getting away with something by playing poker. like outsmarting people was extremely satisfying for me. I was always really good at logic, not amazing at math, more of a "feel" player. I hated live poker at first since i wanted to kill myself after sitting somewhere for 10 hrs and not even making the money. Eventually I loved live tho cuz of the ridic advantages you can get (esp being female). The bottom line for me was that I had been devising ways to weasel out of things/get away with **** my entire life and poker was pretty exhilarating in this regard. Interesting how it turned out that I became successful at it because i put more work into it than anything else in my life, and didnt really get away with much of anything at all. But the sentiment and overall feeling concerning it still holds true.
It is a really interesting question though given the fact that the percentage of women who play poker is like 5% of the entire field and maybe 5% of those women are actually good. It might just be that i'm super deg combined with super competitive and refused to not be able to beat the game. HU was particularly satisfying for me to just rip out someone's soul 1on1.
Poker is super grueling, takes heavy emotional tolls on you, requires you to relinquish certain aspects of your social life, and unless you reach the absolute pinnacle, very hard to get respect/acclaim from (especially being a woman, your legitimacy is always doubted. And even some of my regular friends have 0 clue who phil ivey is). It's also daunting for a lot of women to play such a male dominated game, given that you're not a loud/brash/outgoing/can hang type. You basically have to not take yourself seriously and be able to roll with the crass **** that goes along with it, which unfortunately is not characteristic of many girls. so in that respect it seems like women would just naturally be less drawn to it. However given the different emotional/logistical awareness of themselves women possess and the way that affects viewing poker, I'm confident that capacity/capability/talent are not the issues here, more of just the reasons to get to poker in the first place.
As an aside, I'm also convinced that the people with talent in poker are the same people that are ultra-aware in general, and i've noticed this more with girls than in guys. A couple of girls I know who are very smart and who can manipulate others in social situations, etc, seem very intrigued by poker (one of these is actually a brilliant player in her own right). People that are less smart in the cognizance category, depsite however smart they might be regarding other facets, seem a lot less likely to be able to have talent in poker. I've noticed this cognizance in general far more in women than in men, which is another interesting thing. So I guess I'd be of the mind to say women might be naturally better at assessing the fine points of any given poker situation given that they may be more aware of super intricate details, while men might naturally be better at having the balls to pull the trigger, etc (assuming an equal level of general logical reasoning). Additionally i'd be interested to see what happened in a hypothetically equal skill-level situation between people who possess this level of awareness and people who don't.
Hope that all made sense.
