I think that probably checking the first raise was the best option...

Fold pre. And unless someone is bad enough to fold to that preflop raise size, I don't like it either. Flop I think betting is much better. Turn either 3bet or call is ok depending on what you think of villain. After the 4bet it's a bit awkward but I don't think you can fold it, maybe just call the 4bet to keep bluffs in though you do risk some hands getting there.
