Question is too general, but...
Think in terms of EV rather than try to win every hand. There is nothing wrong with giving up. There is luck in poker when it comes to all ins, but there is also luck in card distribution. If you flat oop and flop comes A82r through no fault of your own, you have arrived at one of the worst boards for your range and have to check fold a lot.
So in a similar sense, if villain is not folding much, then cbetting with hands that have zero equity is a bad idea. Also don't just auto cbet anything that has +ve expectation. There are often hands which have higher EV checked back even though betting is profitable.
Also it depends on later streets- is he folding to 2 barrels often? 3?
