he played generally bad and very face up, I made a massive mistake of calling an earlier 12BB shove with A2o (I suck I know.)
generally I have a pretty good idea by the time we get to the end of the match what my villains would be shoving with if it ever came to it though I really try as hard as possible to never get to end game when I can.

It depends, sometimes it is a high pair, two high cards, stealing attempt (very costly one though), misclick, etc.

You don't have any FE though, so his raise is virtually same to shoving and I'd play it the same. Calling ~8BB shove w/ 44 shouldn't be bad at all.

What about calling and shoving every flop?
He might fold 2 high cards if he misses the flop, or he might fold a higher pair if the flop cointains 2 or 3 overcards?
