I've seen those, and they have nothing to do with my question - you mentioned him scamming again, which would imply him having done so before, as does the "mods let him" part, which seems to indicate there's something we should have known about. So...do you have a link to the previous scam?

Bobo, there was a thread in MTT community where Nick was raising money for a charity. I believe other players were sending him money. Although it wasn't proven conclusively most were left with the impression that if not for the certain posters Nick would never have sent any money.

Your question was "Link?" That I answered. Nick has repeatedly proven to be an untrustworthy individual. Most notably, an issue involving money donated to a hospital, which he did not do.

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/61...-cause-746162/

From what I understand, he has been banned numerous times. Creates fake accounts and shows back up. It's my opinion that he should no longer be allowed to post in these forums.

Let's not get side tracked here. He asked for a stake in the main event and did not show up. Nor did he alert his backers. Only after it was brought up on 2+2 did he come "clean".

I agree 100% with MrMagee. Obviously anyone doing the slightest bit of due diligence would never invest in Nick in the first place.

That said, I also tend to agree that the moderators carry some of the responsibility for this one as well. There is no way that he should have been allowed back on to scam people again after all of his prior encounters. Some people on the staking forums are very naive, and the moderators in some instances need to step in to help those people from the scam artists.

FYP.

Seems to be a lot of people who assume we know everything that goes on in the forums. Here are the facts as I now understand them:
  • Nick Rainey is suspected of pulling some shady stuff on his MI_Turtle account in forums other than the Marketplace. Unfortunately, there are no notes in his profile indicating this, possibly because there are a lot of suspicions but no hard evidence?
  • MI_Turtle was banned for generally acting like a douche.
  • Nick Rainey has started this new account, apparently with the OK of multiple mods and at least one admin, although I haven't been able to confirm this - I don't believe any Marketplace mods were consulted, but since his ban had nothing to do with scams, there was no reason to.
  • There are no IP matches to MI_Turtle, or notes that it is the same person. Obviously he has stated who he is in the title of this thread, but even that gives us no reason for concern since he had never pulled anything in the Marketplace AFAIK.
So here's how it works from the Marketplace end. Funnerwitbunner applies for Marketplace Approval. He has the requisite 6 months, IP matches no one, and has nothing in the Zoo transfers thread attached to his name. Pretty much an automatic approval. Why wouldn't it be?

I think there's some kind of assumption here that things people post in other forums are known to all Marketplace mods, or that we search through hundreds or thousands of people's posts to try to dig up any issues - no way that's going to be happening. The only reason I'm even aware of this thread is because a non-Marketplace mod brought it up in the mod forum this morning, and there was one post report about his General Marketplace thread. Post reports about this thread? None. Zero. Nada. If so many people know about his history, how does no one report it? He disappears for a week with everyone's money, and still no one reports it??

Of course we make mistakes now and then, but geez, a little help would be nice. And don't get me wrong, there are a lot of posters that help out when they spot things and report trouble when they see it, but it really irks me when people try to pin situations like this on the mods without knowing the whole story. I'm not trying to pick on Johnny, he's not the only one to mention it, and I don't think anyone has put exclusive blame on the mods, but I honestly don't think much of this can be put on Marketplace mods.

Cliffs: If you guys are aware of a questionable situation, that's what the post report button is for. When in doubt, report it.

Sure, this makes sense.

No one knows its MI_Turtle even though all related stats are in plain view and he openly claims he is.

No mods knew either.. They're just in the business of handing out under titles to randoms.

The story was that he was donating to a childrens hospital in Oakland although after some research and investigating 2p2ers found that zero money had been sent and the Dr he had claimed to be sending money to had never heard of him iirc.

I saw this thread. Gave little thought to investing but was mostly just amazed that after everything that happened between this guy and this site he was allowed back and given a green light to start MP threads selling action.

I'd like to know which mod bestowed the under title as well? You don't just get one for asking. Someone knew it was him from the start and I'd like to know why, after being banned (for any reason), he was given all of this special treatment upon his return?

I know I make a big deal about having an under title but it kind of is actually. If a random with a small post count makes a MP thread selling and looks to be a complete noob with zero affiliation to the site prior to making his thread it will sell slower and with less success than a poster with a high count. Something like an under title connected with an unfamiliar name gives off the impression that a mod/s know this member and that he did something to A. deserve it and/or B. is a long established member of the site. Neither which are the case here.

edit:

I've actually always pulled for mi_turtle in the past. Have even offered my personal help around the time he was accused of everything going on. Hope there's a good reason for everything now and that he comes out clean here. He's unquestionably one of the best poker players alive, would be nice if his character started reflecting that sentiment.

Did you bother reading my post? He didn't claim he was MI_Turtle when he applied for Marketplace Approval, and there were no IP matches. We aren't psychic. When he started this thread, he was out in the open about it, but as I mentioned, he hadn't been banned for scamming previously, so it probably didn't catch a mod's attention. Also, I don't think there's a single Marketplace mod that comes even close to reading every thread here. Again, if it's so obvious to everyone that MI_Turtle is a scammer, why does no one report the thread?

Oh, this is funny. Yes, that's right, mods just hand out undertitles to randoms. Oh, wait...that was sarcasm, wasn't it? Right, he got an undertitle, so all the Marketplace mods must have known who he was. Except...mods can't change other posters' undertitles.

The only people that can change undertitles are reds, and a couple of blues, and I'm the only blue that does it AFAIK. It wasn't me, so I have to assume it was a red, who likely didn't know the complete history. But of course that has nothing to do with him having Marketplace Approval anyway.

Well, how excellent that you're here to criticize him getting Marketplace Approval when you knew his history and said nothing.

Did not read your post til after posting myself. Didn't change anything. Everything was still all in plain view for anyone. I could've easily said something but who am I to go into threads and point out obvious facts right in front of everyones face for what gain?

The fact that he wasn't hiding anything at all made it seem as if the proper authorities would handle the issue if it were legitimately a concern of anyone. With as many people out there who dislike him greatly I felt confident that if him selling on here were a problem it would've been handled sooner than later.

Also, goldenbears and jordan snap buying shares makes it seem even less likely that I need to make a post to hurt someone unnecessarily. Its probably a cowardly stance but only in the scenario where I'm a mod would I ever come into a thread and prematurely wave flags that would potentially ruin someones selling thread. Especially when everything about his SN indicates he is a member in good standing on 2p2.

I like you. I've told you that directly in the past and I remain grateful for the advice and assistance you've given me. You should know I'm not making personal attacks on you.

I think I've already explained myself above for not acting on my own suspicions. I've also not been on 2p2 as much as I have been in the past. For all I knew he was back and everything was fine. funnerwitbunner even mentions that several mods gave him permission to come back. There could be an entire thread about him begging to come back and I just haven't been on enough to know that.

I agree that we should all keep one another safe and that its everyone's duty to ensure this happens, not just mods. However, I wasn't buying shares, two big names on here were. They should both know well enough to do their own research and bring to light any concerns they may have with any members, especially when buying action.

I blame every poster and viewer itt as much as I blame any single mod for whatever has happened here.. if anything at all.

Meh, maybe I'm getting a little too defensive, and I don't want to take us too far from the matter at hand, which is OP getting everyone's money sent back ASAP.

But at the same time, I think this issue of everyone having their eyes open is important. Even if a thread looks like it should be extremely obvious to mods, don't assume it is. I've been modding the Marketplace since the beginning - back then, I read every post. It's way bigger now, and let's be honest, if you're not in the market for anything, reading every post would be boring as hell. It's gotten to the point where I read almost nothing, and rely on post reports to alert me to potential issues, although I do skim through now and then. I'm not the most active mod in these forums any more, so perhaps some of the others read more than I, but I think it's dangerous to count on this. If you see a potential issue, assume no mod has read it. And it's not like we need any of you to stick your nose in and possibly get into a confrontation you have no desire to be involved in. A post report only goes to the mods of this forum. A simple report like "Hey, did you guys realize that this is MI_Turtle and he is alleged to have pulled a charity scam? Just thought you should know if you didn't already." would be great. More info and/or links is even more helpful, but we'll take what we can get.

This isn't meant to absolve the mods of any responsibility of what goes on here; they still catch a lot of stuff and I think it's fair to expect that they would. But there's no way they will catch everything, so anything our regular posters can do to help out would be great. A lot of you do this already, and it's appreciated. And I'm not trying to call out any individual in this thread; this is just general commentary.

Anyway, back to the important issue - Nick, time to get the money sent back! We're counting on you to get it done today as you said you would.

I met nick this year at the rio since all he played were single table satellites and I played those exclusively outside of my WSOP event schedule. I don't know him that well but my gut says he will pay everyone back. I'm not sure when that will be, I'm fairly certain he needs to raise money to do so. I have met a lot of people in the poker world and feel like I have a good sense of judgement although this story about the hospital would void my opinion if it happened to be true (obviously)

He purchased 2% of one of my good friends in the main event, who has a decent stack like 200 people out of the money. If/when he cashes I will find out who nick owes and divide that equally among everyone.

I find it strange that while you "don't know him that well" you are also going to "find out who nick owes and divide that equally among everyone"

This whole situation to me is starting to smell bad. If it was a last minute emergency that drew him away, wouldn't he still have the initial stakes? Am I missing something here, or does it just look like he tried to satellite in, and blew all the stakes trying?
