Friday Night MGM Detroit $2/$5 NLHE

The table starts out full of $hitty regs and nits.

I buy in for $400

There's one other competent player at the table and it seems him and I have a silent agreement not to get into leveling wars when we play against one another.

Since my bankroll has been steadily growing, I decide to break out a little of lagginess when IP and not play so tight.

1. Qq bb, straddle pot, 4 limps, I raise $60, 1caller, cbet J high board and win. (+100)
2. 89s otb, called a raise here to play a 5 way pot and bricked flop. (-15)
3. Aqs sb, raised $40, 6 limpers, no callers (+30)
4. Q10s, raised to $25, 3 limpers, no callers (+22)
5. Ajs otb, raised, no callers, (+22)
6. A10 mp2, raised, no callers (+7)
7. Qj mp2 (-5)
8. A10s bb, 2 straddle pot, 2 limpers, raised to $40, flop came K J 9 two spades and I just didn't think my A/10 offsuit was good enough to bet OOP to the two rec player villians in the hand. I thought that board smacked their range and I gave up. (-40)
9. 68s otb, raise to $35, no callers (+22)
10. AA utg, raise $20, one caller, rec player in the sb, flop comes 66Q he leads out $70. I flat the $70 and turn brings another Q. He goes all in for $300 and I fold. (-90)
11. A10s bb, straddle pot raise to $35, one caller, I cbet dry 10 high board and win. (+45)
12. Ak sb, r $35, no callers (+22)
13. A10 mp2, r $20, 2 callers, cbet A high flop and win. (+45)
14. Q10s mp2, raise $25, called in 3 spot and have to give up bricked flop. (-25)
15. Qj hj, raise $25, called in 2 spots, donked into on bricked flop and give up. (-25)
16. Ah8h hj, r $25 2callers, flop is Kh Q 8 and I decide to give up on it when donked into again. (-25)

Question? What should I be doing with donk bets when they come at me. All of these donks were by this old Asian guy who I was told plays lock down tight. He donked at me in AA hand, plus the two hands above....

When is the time to stick up to/make a move on his donks?

The AA hand I was definitely playing for stacks if the other Q doesn't hit.

This A8s hand I almost flatted/peeled another one because that flop smacks my raising range and I have a pair/backdoor flush opportunity...but his $75 donk was just too much.

Thoughts
?

17. 103s otb, r $25, 2 callers cbet 939 board. (+50)
18. Ak mp1, raise to $30, 4 callers, have to check/fold bricked flop (-30)
19. A7s co, r $25 2callers, have to chop pot (+12)
20. A9o co, r $20 1 caller, cbet dry board (+25)
21. Aj otb r $15 2callers are in the blinds. Flop comes J 4 2, and bb has $125 left, plus a weak jack and I get it all. (+125)
22. A7s mp (-5)
23. Aa bb, r $35, no callers (+22)
24. 55 mp, set mined/called a raise (-25)
25. 109s co r $25, 1 caller, cbet bricked flop. (+25)
26. 75s otb, r $25, 2callers, have to fold A K 10 flop. Donked into from other guy.
27. A3s hj, r 25, 1c, cbet and (+25)
28. A7s hj (-5)
29. A10s sb, 7 limpers, r $65 1caller, cbet Q 4 2 rainbow board (+100)
30. Q10s mp, limp in, flop open ender, check/call, hit it on turn, check it again, villain bets again because flush draw that was out there missed and i believed villain had me on flush draw. I ended up checking river and in turn might have missed $75 to $100 value. (+175)
31. Kjs co, 4 limpers, raise to $35, 1 caller, cbet K high flop and win (+55)
32. QQ + $800

This is the big one....

It's the end of the night and a drunk aggro fish spewtard sits to my direct left with a 3.5k stack.

I have watched this man open to $40 with 55, Q8s, QJo, 96s, and even 83 offsuit that he showed when everybody folded.

I also watched him play this hand.

Guy opens UTG to $40, gets called in two spots.

Flop comes J 10 4

Guy leads $100. Gets called in one spot.

Turn is a 9. Guy leads $300. Gets called again.

River is a harmless duece.

Guy leads $600. Gets called again by J/10.

So he triple barrels off $1000.00.

As the nights gone on, over the last hour he's been telling me that I better leave or he is going to take my stack.

Mentioning I haven't played much, etc, etc, etc...

I decide it is time to leave and start racking my chips. He says, "you gonna play one last hand?" I say, "sure."

The cards are dealt and as I am racking my chips I look down and see QQ.

I just know this guy is going to raise it since it's my last hand.

So, I just call.

He makes it $40 as expected.

There's two callers by the time it gets back to me and I jack it up to $200.

The guy tanks and tanks and tanks. He then decides to call.

All others fold.

I have his range weighted heavily towards A2-A9, KQ-K9, QJ-Q8, J10, and all pocket pairs 22-99...but other random trash still in it because I guarantee this guy would LOVE to bluff me off a big old pot and he's competent enough to know I am holding JJ-AA or AK/AQ.

I do not believe he has 1010-AA or AJ-Ak because he would have spazz shipped.

I am first to act post flop and have decided that I am betting $200 out into all boards that do not have a Q on it.

This essentially will commit me to the hand, no matter what he does and I am fine with that.

May be able to find a fold if board has a K and an A in it, but most likely not.

Board is A 2 4 rainbow.

I bet the $200.

He says, "That's too bad you had to get so aggressive with your last hand. Save your money man. I'm all in."

He then reached for his pile of blacks and threw them into the pot.

Just like he reached for his pile of black chips when he did the $100, $300, $600 triple barrel bluff line.

Now, in no way am I saying I for sure had a tell on this guy...but, poker is a game of incomplete information and you just have to act on the information you do have however limited it may be...

I called him.

Guy showed Q/J offsuit.

Ship it.

Session 6 of 10 Day Challenge

Woke up, set my fantasy football line ups, and smoked some high quality marijuana with my best friend who is a police officer.

The high calmed the pain of watching my Detroit Lions lose.

After that, I decided to go to MGM Detroit and play $1/$2 NLHE for seven hours.

During this session I was set over setted, had my pocket aces cracked by 50-60bb stacks twice, and two outed on the river in one hand where we got it all in on the turn....

Thankfully, I went "Against All Odds" Phil Collins style and came out of the session only down $95.00.

Session 7+8 of 10 Day Challenge

Session 7 was during the Monday Night Football game and I played for four hours.

I finished up $335.00.

This session offered one of the rare spots where I decided to call with a raise with trash hand.

I was bored, there wasn't much raising going on, and so I decided to limp Jh8h from UTG2.

Mp1 made it $15 and by the time it got back to me there were 6 callers.

I decided to pay $13 more to enter a 7 way pot.

$105 in the pot.

Flop is 10c 9s 7h.

I check. Gets to button and he bets $40. Asian man who won $450 from me in the $2/$5 hand I misread a week ago smooth calls the $40. I smooth call as well.

$225 in pot now.

Turn is a 5h.

I check. Otb checks. Asian man bets $100.00.

I ship all in for $250.00.

Otb folds, Asain man snap calls for $150 more with 6s8s and the hand is dead to a chop.

Session 8 was last night and was cut short after two hours because my friend who is in from Seattle, Washington went busto.

I did finish up $108.00 in the two hours, though.

After this session I took my friend to the Detroit Tigers game, bought him a few drinks at the bar, and let him crash on the couch at my condo in Detroit.

This morning when I woke up, I discovered that my friend who I hadn't seen in 8 years has a problem and I'll soon be sharing with you all what happened in a short story I am going to write that will be called "$290.00 USD."

I depart to WSOP Cincinnati tomorrow and I will be bringing my desktop computer. So, I'll also be working more on "The Legend Of Paco."

Here's some correspondence between myself and a person that reached out to me via private message looking for some advice on how to get back to winning $20+ a hour at $1/$2 NLHE.

In his initial im to me, he said he averaged $18 a hour at $1/$2, but after I thread stalked him I noticed that his win rate for 2013 was $11 a hour and I called him out on that...

"That $11/hr is just for 2013. The phone I had my results tracked with crapped out of me the end of last year so I don't have session-by-session records for 2012. All I know is I played 428 hours and averaged about $26/hr in that frame."

(Then you might have been playing better in 2012. What's changed in your game since then? Have you loosened up your limping range since you believe you can "outplay people post flop"...have you loosened up your raise calling range since you believe you can "outplay people post flop"...have you loosened up your raising range since you believe you can "outplay people post flop" and double barrel or triple barrel bluff when needed? Are you making more hero calls? Are you tilting more easily because you think you have the game mastered and deserve to win? Going from $26 a hour win rate to $11 a hour win rate is a HUGE SWING. Something is off.)

"I actually think I'm pretty aware of my own leaks. A big one in the past has been my inability to give up on bluffs. Once I fire that second barrel I'm pretty likely to go ahead an fire a third even if I know it has a small likelihood of success."

(I can count on one hand the amount of times I've triple barreled in 2013. I can count on 3-4 hands the amount of times I've double barreled. Double and triple barreling isn't profitable for most players at $1/$2 NLHE in my humble opinion. I laugh every time I see a solid player blow through a buy in trying to "outplay" an unsophisticated villain. HUGE LEAK.)

"I've worked on that though the past couple of months and have gone back to my standard TAG game. I logged a lot of hours playing live 1/2 before 2012 but just never kept records. Started playing live around 19 when my friends and I would take trips to Turning Stone in upstate New York cause it was only 18+. When I turned 21 I started taking trips to AC and playing 30+ hour sessions on the weekends because I didn't want to pay hundreds of dollars to get a room in AC on Friday/Saturday night. I think my hourly for those days was probably only around $10-$12/hr because my A-game would fall off pretty hard once I passed the 15-20 hour mark."

(Play 6-8 hour sessions. You should be able to stay on your A-game for that amount of time. If you feel you are slipping into B game or C game. Get up, take a walk, go get something to eat, flirt with a waitress, etc....one of the biggest advantages you can have over all players is making sure the time you spend at the table is time you're on your A-game. Let all the other players sit there and play on their B and C games.)

"Limping ranges:

UTG: 22-66, KQo, AJo, JTs
MP: Pretty much the same
LP: I rarely limp from LP unless it's with small PPs/SCs and there have been a few limps in front of me. Otherwise I raise. I raise limpers with SCs 76s+ in LP in the right table conditions (i.e. against opponents who either limp/fold PF or limp/call and play fit-or-fold post-flop.)"

(I like what you're doing here. If your raise gets called and flop c-bet gets called, try not double barreling unless an A or K comes on the turn. Give up triple barreling all together. Also, only limp-call a raise with PP's. Set mining is your friend. Do not limp 10Js and call a raise unless you know the pot is going to be 5 way. Even then, you can still fold if you want to....but if looking to gamble with a SC look for 5 people in pot or you and a couple people in the pot to be at 200bb+...)

"Raise/calling range:

I guess this means calling when I get 3bet. The first thing I consider is stack size - if I raise it up in EP with TT-77 and get 3bet I will call if it's for 10% or less of effective stacks, and I know the villain has an overpair and is incapable of getting away from it. I fold KQ/AJ/AQ to 3bets. One small preflop leak I think I have is raising hands like KJo/QJo in EP. If I have a great image and my c-bets are successful at a high clip I don't think this is too bad but I still raise it up with these hands even at no-fold'em-hold'em tables which is probably a mistake."

(Do not raise the hands you just listed above from EP, just don't. You'll often be getting called by hands like A10, KQ, KJ or 1010 and be in a bloated pot, OOP. We gain an edge over all villains by NEVER playing a raised pot OOP unless we are set mining or have a true premium hand. Then, when we hit our set we often double through villains or win a huge pot.)

"Raising ranges:

UTG: AA-88, KQ-KJ, QJ
MP: Basically the same
LP: AA-22, KQs-K9s, QJs-Q9s, T9s-76s (though not always - depends on table conditions)"

(My Raising ranges:

UTG: AA-1010, AQ+,
MP: AA-99, A10s+, AJ, KQ
LP: AA-99, Axs, K10s, QJs, KQ, and some SCs depending on table conditions.

DO NOT RAISE 22-88 in LP, limp in. Raising folds out potential players we can stack when we hit set. Trust me.

Also, DO NOT feel obligated to raise in HJ, CO, or OTB just because it's been folded around to you. You don't have to be aggro/always show you are the best at the table. I would say in a 7-8 hour session. I'm probably position raising with SCs or Axs only 6-7 times. If table is SUPER TIGHT, then yeah..I'll open a little bit more just to get the nits riled.)

"Small blinds:

Yes I fold nearly all of my small blinds but I do end up limping after several other limpers with hands like 85s, Q5s, even T9o, etc. I could probably afford to tighten up a bit from the SB."

(Just start folding mostly everything and you'll add $2-$3 a hour to your win rate at $1/$2.)

(Also, when you get a premium in the SB or BB, raise $21-$27... have the attitude, "You want to try to outflop me, go for it motherfukker" and jack that **** up bro...If your $27 raise with A/Q nets $10 in limped money. That's great. You didn't even HAVE to hit your pair.)

"Basically, I think I have a pretty solid theoretical understanding of what it takes to beat these games - I just suffer from occasional lapses in discipline and the mental game. For example, if I'm stuck/close to even, it's late and night and close to when I had planned on quitting, I'll be more likely to raise it up with SCs in LP, even if table conditions suggest it's -EV, just so I can "force a win" for the day."

(You're smart enough already to know this, it's all one big session. As soon as the thoughts about wanting to try to "SECURE A WIN" start entering your head. It's time to quit. Let the other "wanna be" pros with the Beats By Dre headphones do stuff like that.)

"When I'm good, I'm really good. But I have those occasional lapses where I spew off 2-3 buy-ins and that severely cuts into my winrate."

)4 lapses a month where you spew off $400-$600 is a bad habit that costs you $1600-$2400 a month in profit. You might want to stop doing it soon. It's not cool to spew and you're not entitled to spew just because you're on tilt or got a bad run of cards. You're a professional and have the opportunity to make a living playing cards when most people have to work soul sucking jobs. Stop putting your bankroll and the way you want to make a living in jeopardy.)

Hope I have been helpful.

Feel free to send me any more questions.

Over and out,

-LG

Arrived safe, went shopping at Kroger, and am now getting ready to go to the casino.

As per my op...I will play a session tonight on "The People's Bankroll."

I will chart each hand and try to play for 6 to 8 hours. If at any time I am up over 300bb I will lock in the win unless table conditions are incredible.

Obviously you trust my judgement.

Will post in this thread as soon as I am sat.

Will be wearing shorts, gray shirt, red Northface tonight.

Updates to come soon.

So, I remember why I can't stand Horseshoe casinos...

All games are 9 handed, $200 max buy in for 1/2, and they never keep a table full.

At a table full of nits/regs and two short stacks. Cant move because it's playing six handed.
