Why do we help each other? Why do we help each other?

I hope it’s okay to post this here - it’s aimed at the regulars on this particular section.

Why do you give advice? We are literally competing against one another at the tables, so why do we help each other here?

Are there any nuggets of advice that you are reluctant to share?

It just interests me, as poker is a selfish game yet to give advice seems to be unselfish and counterproductive to ones own goal of winning mtts. Just interested in your motivation, whether you were helped by others here when you were starting out or if it just entertains you to discuss hands.

Thanks.

For one it is a pool of contributors and it helps us all to keep it going.

It is important to note that when we work through hands mentally and put our thoughts into writing it opens our own minds to things we may not have seen otherwise and putting it in writing helps to retain the information.

It's an interesting way to think about poker hands and calibrate the way you look at spots.

I haven't worried much about giving too much away, a large majority of the posters here are either better than me, or unwilling to learn, so I doubt my participation hurts my bottom line at all.

We are all trying to improve our game. Asking questions about certain hands and having input on others is a good way to do so. It's a good community here

The cool fact is that most people will still be lazy.
Of the overall playerpool the heroes contributing here are a tiny fraction.

Like others said, it will benefit everyone involved to study and discuss best practices and develop our skill and strategy trough discussion, and in practice its very unlikely to affect us at all.

Next level is private or smaller group discussions. When discussing more advanced concepts or part of my own game im only comfortable sharing between one or a group of 3-4 maybe 5 guys I trust.

Also becasue the work I put in with piosover etc tends to be really high value and I put a lot of hours into creating such reports and solutions, and it would be overwhelming to post here.

If you want to talk on skype or so shoot me PM

I feel in the live game.... a lot of people playing mtts aren’t taking advantage of 2+2 and other materials that can be learned from. Seems to me atleast at lower buy in levels, old rec players don’t care about playing optimal or atleast learning to find a way.

This past weekend at a live mtt, I saw a guy limp AA maybe 2-3 times and not 3bet kk pre in later stages where it was much easier to get stacks in by turn. I think a lot of rec players are terrible and could care less if they get better. I think the help provided here only goes so far as most people in live mtts probably haven’t even heard of 2+2 I feel.

By helping each other, we confront our thought process. We emancipate ourselves from being our own judges. We learn as we teach and share our opinions. Therefore, everybody gains from theses discussions. For example, I am pretty much all by myself in my aera. I don't know anyone who is "at the same level" of dedication and comprehension eventhough I am not a full time pro (I work full time as an accountant but poker is still a decent side income). That is why being able to share and argue with other players from different backgrounds and at different levels is so worthy. It is not all though as once you comprehend something you couldn't prior to a discussion, you still have to add it to your global strategy and go further.

This pretty much reflects my own thoughts on the matter

its fun to talk about poker strat.

I think there’s actually a fair bit of stuff that’s stays off the forum though, especially post flop.

i think of it as completely separate from battling in game. i also believe if there's a 10-player ecosystem, and one of the players had expert training, that it wouldn't lead to a bad outcome.

I offer help here for a number of reasons.

My mentor 12 years ago recommended I come to this online forum to improve my game.

So I could, I suppose, just read what is here and not contribute. But if everyone did that there would be no content here...

Another part of the reason I offer help here is that I have read a number of poker books that have helped me. I think it is important to pay it forward.

When I offer help in the diagnoses of a hand it may or may not help others, but it always helps me.

There are times when I start a response and then never post it, because I can't support what I am saying.

There are other times when I start saying one thing and then end up changing my opinion on what I would do because my own analysis is contradicting itself.

But what is true always is that by articulating what I think, I hear it in a different way. In some cases it strengthens my point of view.

I also gain a lot of insight here from other players who are posting. Sometimes they disagree with my position. In that case I always consider what they are saying and what it is that I may not know or be doing.

As to being afraid that my help could end up hurting me at the tables, I trust that I get a lot more out of learning here than the risk of running into somebody that I helped. And if that is the case, then so be it. Bring it on.
