Got in a spot and looking for opinions. Day 2, everyone is in the money. 100 runners left. Average stack about 160k. 2nd orbit of day, no reads yet.

I start the hand utg +1. Stack size 116k. Im about 5th in chips at table. Blinds are 3000, 6000, and big blind ante 6000. Utg, stack of 112k, min raises to 12k. I look down at JJ.
Whats my best play?

i think the standard play is to make it like 35,000 and not fold if he jams.

Any read on UTG? Unless he's a super nit, I'm probably just jamming here. 20 bb is too short to **** around.

I think we can make a reasonable call to call here. This is still UTG vs. UTG where we should mostly be predisposed to calling rather than jamming. Plus villain is also on 20BB which may lead them to be tighter than normal. (not sure if there are lots of short stacks or meaningful pay jumps)

If villain was deeper and/or someone we thought was likely to call off light, then I would lean towards jamming. If we were 15BB I'd almost certainly be jamming.

At this stack depth its a jam all day long. If you just call you risk more players coming into the pot for cheap making it a lot harder for us to win the pot.

Also by just calling you make it incredibly hard for yourself if an overcard comes and villian cbets. Essentially have to play the guessing game.

If they have AA-QQ its just unlucky. Could also have 10s or 9s and call a jam but may shut down on a high board if you just call.

Shove 20BB
Folds out KQ/AQ (which would call and get sticky if you raise to 5BB)

Thanks for the responses. I beat myself up second guessing my decision on this hand. I did in fact jam. And utg happened to have QQ. But no matter how i spun this i didnt see another way to play it. Cant fold. Flatting seemed bad. Thought about making it 35000. Decided to put pressure on everyone and jam. Flop was 9 high. Money was getting in no matter what..just sucks busting out.

At least you went out playing the hand well and getting unlucky. You could have had QQ, UTG could have had JJ and the results would be reversed. But overall the play should be +ev.

When I bust in tournaments to bad luck or losing a coin flip with a short stack shove, that’s how it goes and long term the play should be +ev. It’s when you make a mistake and bust that you really need to analyse your play so as not to make the same mistake again.

Literally one of those horrid spots you hope to avoid in a tournament, because even though jamming is clearly the right play...does UTG/someone behind ever roll over anything other than QQ-AA?
