I'm new to posting and not sure if this is the right forum for it. I've been playing MTTs online for a long time and I've come to the conclusion that the best way to play big hands is to let the other player fire into you. Most of the time I'll check/call big hands and yes sometimes your opponent catches, but a lot of the time they're firing their whole stack on the turn or river drawing dead when if I had come out betting the flop, they would have folded. Explain to me why this isn't a good strategy.

Sometimes that is better, depending on the players, if they are playing overagressively. However, you may miss value when they have medium strength hands they are looking to show down. You might want to get familiar with GTO, which indicates what situations that approach works better in.

I used this strategy for something like my first year of playing mtt’s. The value gained is at least balanced by value missed and its success rate will be very opponent specific. Good players will adapt very quickly, though it does set us up nicely for over-bet river bluffs when bet into thin. In general, I feel like we miss too much value from hands that won’t bet but will call

Highly advise against this playing online in a small player pool or a site that allows huds for the exact reason stated above, the gain will be offset my missed value in other hands. If you've ever looked at pio, you'll notice Pio almost never slow plays and in turn balances value with the proper combo of bluffs to make bluff catching ~0 ev for Villain. A better approach would be to learn the leaks of your opponents and then deviate on a case by case basis appropriately.

Exactly. To illustrate this clearly, imagine that your opponent is betting flop, turn and river 100% and never adjusting. Then your approach would be 100% effective. Now imagine that your opponent is check/calling 100%; your approach would hardly make a cent. You need to try to balance and deviate according to the passive/aggressive extreme that your opponent is closest to.
