Opening raise size > to range size

Ive been looking to understand the theory behind how your opening raise size correlates to how wide your range is, i understand you can open wider the smaller your raise size as you are risking less to win the pot.
Just wondering how exactly i should be looking at this, so i can understand the theory behind raising 2, 2.2, 2.5, 3 x in terms of range composition.

Once again; too general. Stack depth is too important to leave out of this equation, beyond the notion that bigger sizing need to be tighter.
