My first live game...the Grand West Poker Series My first live game...the Grand West Poker Series

Howzit guys so I turned 18 today which makes it legal for me to gamble(live in South Africa). Before online poker was banned I played 1/2c tables, basically for fun. I generally play poker for the fun of it but for my birthday my family bought me a ticket to The Grand West Poker Series on the 16th of December 2011. The buy in is about R2500= 400 dollars and it is a 3 day event with 100,000 dollars up for grabs.

I have never played live before only with my mates for matchsticks and maybe a 2 dollar buy in. I am not going to re-buy or addon, I am just going with my starting stack.

I haven't play poker in about 3/4 months. If any of you guys could give me any advice in anyway it would be greatly appreciated, I have a poker book written by Matt Matros and I think I am going to read that hopefully it will help

Can't really try live out before Grand West tournament because of school.

My plan is to play nit? I know the first 3 levels are re-buy and addon. I remember watching the AAPT on TV once( African Poker Tournament) and during the re-buy, addon period people used to spew chips and played really loose. Obv I can't do this because I am not taking the re-buy and addon.

Still going to be an awesome experience I think

Your gonna be putting yourself in a bad position not taking any rebuys and especially the add on, your going to be at a big chip deficit unless you double up a couple of times before the add on. Can you not get the ticket refunded and play a $400 fo?

this is not true at all. not having a rebuy (or do you mean reentry op?) is perfectly fine.

Not being funny but you'll be eaten alive. Use the money for something else.

This tourney is gonna be super high variance with people gambling it up because of rebuys.

Is 400 bucks alot to you? Think what else you could do with the money. So you cant play internet poker at all?? If i could i would use the 400 as a bankroll and grind it up.

Ps these are all very boring and sensible suggestions, if you do play use this thread to update along the way. Ship it!

Its not perfectly fine because when the rebuy period finishes they'll be add-ons which will possibly double/triple alot of the stacks around him, making him a shorty the whole way and effectively playing with 1/3 of the chips (if its a triple chance, more if unlimited)

lol its a 400r its not a 5r. i made some assupmtions based on a few previous rebuys or reentries. i guess it depends on the structure and starting stack, but usually there wont be many rebuys and youll still have a perfectly fine ratio to all the other stacks.

op do you know the structure and starting stack? and rebuy amounts
