Medium pairs facing a 3-bet Medium pairs facing a 3-bet

I open pairs like 77-99 from EP and include 66 from MP. When facing a normal 3-bet (3-3.5x) from later positions, I am unsure if I should call. I hate calling from OOP.

Can I call if I villain will stack off a strong hand to my set? If the player is loose I can't continue when I will likely miss flop and player c-bets.

How would the strategy differ when effective stack size is 70bb+ vs 50bb+ vs 30bb+?

This has to be based on reads imo. It’s dynamic with no general rule. If calling seems like the best option against an aggressive V that 3bets wide, then call.

50 BB + seems fine to set mine.

30 BB seems a little light to set mine if the 3 bettor is only betting top hands.

If it player 3 betting wide, it changes things a bit.

we can normally set-mine for ~10% of our stack regardless of position. we're going to hit a set 1 out of 8 times and with implied odds we can expect to win more than just the pot going to the flop.

with shorter stacks we might want to consider a stop and go strategy where we're going to check raise boards where we flop a straight draw in addition to our pair or some paired boards.
