Hey all,

I got placed into this pretty disgusting spot against an absolute madman. For context, we have played three hands in those 5 hands this man has:

1. Bluffed off 1/4 of his stack with Q7o OTR with a low card paired board
2. 5 bet bluffed 94s into AA, cracking AA
3. Lost back all he earned in a flip

FULL HAND:

Global Poker Grizzly Games 22-H $10K GTD 6-max

Blinds 10/20, Most of us around 5,000 starting

No stats cause global =(

Hero (UTG): $5280 (264BB)
MP: $5085 (254BB)
MANIAC (BB): $4305 (215BB)

SB posts 10, Villain in BB posts 20

Pre Flop: Hero with KQ opens UTG to 60. MP and Maniac

Flop (Pot 190): 9J6

MANIAC leads 160, Hero calls, MP folds. Heads up to the turn...

Turn (Pot 510): 10

MANIAC bets 320. Hero Calls.

Did not x/r because I have the Q of spades, which takes out a lot of the draws I want to protect from and weights him toward worse value hands or air.

River (Pot 1,150 - MANIAC is 3,785 effective): J

MANIAC jams 3,785. Hero?

From one perspective, the 3x overbet, 190BB jam is obviously nutted especially since we know he is a bad player.
I enjoy this simple logic, but this spot was especially tough due to how crazy he has been in the few hands we have seen. He has bluffed every river in my albeit small sample. I had just seen him 5-bet 94s 200BB deep. The lead on the flop does seem like a Jack, but there are so few combos of J10 and J9 left (1 suited combo, 6 unsuited each). I think he would play all his trips as a jam as well + worse straight combos. In the moment, I could not place a number on his bluff range.

Let me know what you guys think.

Spoiler:
He had J9o sadly

I think there is roughly 0 hand he b/f turn so raise the nuts at this point seems pretty good.

River is probably sort of a snap fold, really, what he did before does not really change the fact that this is a 4x pot river jam in a spot where he has 0 air and a TON of J6/J9/JT/66/99 combos and we can ourself easilly have those hands as well so we're not at the top of our range and vs this sizing we're allowed to fold quite a bit.

People don't 4x jam river anything else than the nuts (sometimes air, but he pretty much can't have air here). The "crazy" image is one more reason for him to overplay his good hands.

Not raising turn is such a big mistake, it's almost irrelevant to say anything else except "raise turn". I could be wrong, but I don't we're ever, ever supposed to be in this spot.

I guess for 200bb we fold, but shallower like ~75bb or less I think we gotta call. That's arguably the worst river card in the deck, maybe even worse than 8s, Ks, or Js.

Makes me laugh to think that maniac will now double up and be convinced he’s playing well. Please raise turn large, river is meh - but it’s academic since V isn’t folding turn to any sizing and will probably bet jam.

@Oldsilver and @Xamlop, thank you for the input

I definitely agree now that x/r is the best play versus this opponent, especially this deep and with a player this sticky.

What do you guys think of my logic for not check raising:

Board: 9J610

"Did not x/r because I have the Q of spades, which takes out a lot of the draws I want to protect from and weights him toward worse value hands or air."

Against more standard opponents, is this valid reasoning? Is it dependent on the stack sizes? AP I felt I have alot of check raises on the rivers that do not pair the board

Tricky spot. Unlucky to get outdrawn, else you would probably have been paid off. Raise turn is obviously best but I don’t hate calling and letting this guy go wild on the river with 2 pair, a set or air
