Played a few live mtt's last week. 80-100 players in them.
However the structure in these pub tournaments are pretty bad. It pretty much turns into a crap shot pretty quickly.

Should you really only stick to the majors played at the casino with longer blind levels? I'm considering railing these live mtt's at the pubs while trying to pick up broads when the situation comes. The reason for railing is to try and read players. Spending $100+ a night playing them seems like a waste of money when i could put that towards the bigger buy-in mtts at the casino with the trophys and price money worth winning if you run super hot.

Assuming that Australian pub leagues play like most American pub leagues the games are fast loose and full of awful players. I would save my time and use it to use training sites v’s trying to read bad players.

It can still be profitable depending on the rake. What is the rake structure/payout like?

I think a tournament like this can help you with your shoving/calling ranges. Most live players make the biggest mistakes playing short stacked.

Save your money for APL events at Stars in March each year, plus any number of other casino events.

I've flown up to play the last couple of series and they're awesome, with a good mix of players and sensational prize pools.

I'd be surprised if there was a single pub event with a decent structure anywhere in the world. Most final tables have an average of 5BB which makes reads irrelevant.

Besides, reads are the most overrated part of poker and can for the most part be entirely ignored.

Assume you know your stuff playing a crap structure with bad players should still be +ev barring ridiculous rake, no?

Unless your roll don't allow it I would value sitting at a table more than just railing the game.

The casino here in perth is opening this weekend. I don't know when the mtts will run.

$95+25 for rake is that too high? $120 buyin. $50 addon as well. 20 min blinds and over 100 entries. usually runs fron 6.15pm till around 1.30am the facebook poker message told me.

7 hours is a little better than the 4-5 hours the pub games run for.

is the casino mtt worth playing?

is it worth playing for the money? No.
is it worth playing for a bit of fun and mtt experience? Sure, why not.

These kind of tourneys are not my first choice. Or second choice really.

But when I find myself knocked out of a decent tourney at Foxwoods, I am wide awake, and it is doesn't make sense to enter the 6pm daily, I will often play the 8pm or 10pm turbo-esque tournies. The rake is ridiculous and first place is a joke, but I do it for several reasons.

It really hones my short stack skills because when a tourney goes into crap shoot mode its only a crap shoot if everybody is doing it right.

And it allows me to get to the final table and hopefully the last 4 so I can practice short handed against decent players. Because typically the players who make it that far are better than the rest.

Also, it helps me practice emotional stability when I take a bad beat because I am rarely losing big hands to someone who played it better.

Edit: For example: I had AA and on the turn the other player c/r's all in with top pair. I call and lose when he rivers 2 pair. Seeing my AA another player at the table tells me that sometimes its better to fold AA if I am going to lose. I point out I was ahead when I called on the turn and he continues to try to convince me I should have folded. At which point I learn to celebrate when idiots make mistakes, even if it doesn't help me in the moment.

Yeah I wouldn't even bother telling him what I think is correct and just let him tell us what he thinks is correct and I can have a think about it and come to a conclusion if he's correct.

In this case it wouldn't take long for me to figure out we got it in best on the turn. A quick glance at the board and our opponents hand tells us so.

Pub tourneys can be great for small stakes (in the UK at least many I've seen are £5-10 rebuys or similar). $100 seems a lot for something like this with a poor structure so assuming the rake, structure, entrants, etc are all similar-to-marginally-better in the casino then play those. Maybe play the pub ones occasionally to fill in when there's nothing else to play or for relaxation/social aspect?
