Day 2 of the tourney.
Big blind 8k, small blind 4k, 400 ante, 9 handed

Stacks and details: Im on the btn and i have a stack of 135k (17bb).
Sb has me covered with about 300k. I also have played previously with the sb player in cash games and I know he 3 bets light.

Folds to me on the btn, I look at KJhh and open to 20k, sb 3 bets me to 62k. Bb folds. I elect to just flat his 3 bet in position and plan to play fit or fold postflop. Thoughts on the flat call? I dont think i have any fold equity with a 4b jam and i dont want to fold with there being 97.6k in the pot already and i need to call 42k more. The call leaves me with 73k. Would open jamming 17bb with kjhh from the btn have been the preferred play?

As it turns out flop is 359hh, sb shoves, i call, he turns over kqo and i hit my flush on the turn.

I think the biggest mistake in the hand is made by the sb, i think if he is going to 3 bet preflop it should be a shove rather than a 3x, thoughts on his play preflop?

I prefer an open ship here at 17 BBs vs. what could be perceived as a wide BTN open with ATC.

As played, I just fold to a 3b/3b shove. I don't want to play fit or fold on the flop to possibly leave myself with 9BBs. That's why you just open ship the first time, instead. It's pretty close for him to call with KQo, and he probably still would have if he's good unless he thinks you're really tight, but in general there are a lot of hands he'd be folding for 17BBs that are otherwise playable to a 2.5x BTN raise that you have fold equity with by open shoving.

Yes, his sizing is strange since he doesn't appear to have any idea what your remaining stack is, but it's rare that this is a 3b/3b shove by V with QJ or KT/K9s which are the only hands you're ahead of at this point. You're really just not in great shape against a large part of his range.

Whether or not SB shoves is dependent on the BB's stack size (and possibly the strength of his hand vs BB potentially calling). If he was the BB then yes a 3-bet would be an auto shove.

I am never calling the 3-bet either (can't go to 9 BB's) and for this reason I would raise to slightly less pre-flop (for all of my pre-flop raises). I would size it between 16,000 and 18,000. Probably 17,000. Once below 15 BB's its a shove pre-flop.

I don't mind shoving 17 BB's from the BTN because it only has to get past 2 players. However, I don't love it here because BB will call with hands like AJ and possibly KQ.

Oops, I guess I read too quickly. Was thinking this was vs. BB. Yeah, it makes SB's range even tighter in that case so you're rarely in good shape against anything that's call his 3b here.

I still stand by my opinions in the first two paragraphs, though.
