How big of a dog am I? How big of a dog am I?

Hi all,

I am considering playing a regional $1,100 NLHE MTT. I almost never play NLHE anymore. My question is based on being a pretty good LHE player/mix player, how big of a dog am I? Or do I possibly have an edge? I understand this calls for significant speculation.

I work full time, but I still play about once per week and play mid-stakes mix games, including LHE. I am a slightly winning player, and have a working understanding of game theory in limit poker games. I do not own a solver and have not worked with solvers, so obviously by "working understanding" I do not intend to represent that I am some sort of GTO genius. I consider LHE to by my strongest game, and feel I am competitive at least up to 40/80 or so.

I played a decent amount of NLHE tournaments, mostly SNGs, before Black Friday. After Black Friday I played the occasional live MTT, including some high buy-in events, but it has been years since I have played NLHE with any regularity. I played some 2/5 and 5/10 about a year ago and felt pretty comfortable, but a bit lost in some big bet spots.

Poker is poker
Anyone competitive in 40/80 poker at any game, be it LHE stud Manila pineapple or aceydeucy, will have enough clue to mix it with your typical $1k live field, especially if there are satellites to the event.
Just follow others lead as to sizing pre, but if in doubt 2.5bb is never far wrong for an open, 3x for a 3bet 2.3x for a 4bet, all sized up 0.5bb out of position
Take cc lines v the aggro types to print $ and assume everyone is a fish incapable of folding top pair until proven otherwise

Probably Pyrenees or Newfoundland sized dog. But not as big as Mastiff or Great Dane, because you have played before. If you make it through the first couple of hours, you'll probably tune in enough to become an Irish Terrier sized dog.

Thanks. I am aware that your typical open has gone down to the sub-3x range these days, although I will admit that I do not really know why. I assume it is to allow you to open a wider range, but it seems that there must be an inflection point where people are calling larger raises with such trash that it makes sense to exploitatively open larger.
