In this one I think it not making much sence for the Villain to not put down the continution bet. If u are thinking abt it even smth like the QQ and JJ are OK with being betting and I am not sure what standard Villain will be having here.

My assmption would be he is mostly gonna be slowplay trapps like the KK and things like 88-QQ that maybe he is afraid of the King on table even though he should not be so much


I thinking it easy for the Villain to just make small bet with the Ace high and the junk that he may be having like the QJ and QT and JT but he want to be protect the 88 thru QQ stuff too much and maybe slowplay a lot.

Are you thinking this is resonable guess about what he is having? That he is mostly KK and 88-QQ when he xback and having less of the Ace-high and worse?

It is a very dry flop, so it does make sense that V should be barrelling (small sizing) most of his range vs BB defender. Check back could be KK or pair smallwe than K's, but I wouldn't bet that with a random V that these hands are the majority of his range with about 16.5 bbs left after flop bet. He could also be trapping with AK with such small effective stacks. Or V might be happy to check back his A high hands. Where are we in relation to bubble? That might help define V's hand some.

Not sure that the check narrows his range as much as you think - he needs to have checks here with value as well as air despite it being a fairly good board for him to range bet. I imagine that you personally do a fair bit of x/r'ing otf in general so if V has history with you then I wouldn't be surprised to see him check here pretty merged

This is a flop I would cbet 100%.

No flush draws, one straight draw and a bunch of gutters. And it gives villain a free card on the turn with smaller pairs. If hero c/r's and villain has a hand like 88-QQ its a pretty easy fold.

I get that if villain has a set he might want to slow play but in the end, IMO it just isn't worth it.

As played I would guess villain has a set (KK/77) or 88-QQ. So more likely an underpair.

Hope the turn was Q or J...

If we were V, we would cbet 88. Would we cbet QQ ? Maybe...

This hand is actually a textbook Janda example, so I’m just going to cut/paste from an Upswing summary. Keep in mind that Hero is deciding on the cbet and opponent is in BB.

OP if you read your hand again in this context, it should provide a rationale behind why your opponent should (be more likely to) bet or check this flop. Then look at your own blockers and see how V range looks.

Why do we bet?

1. To build a bigger pot in case we win it, and/or
2. To prevent our opponent from realizing their equity

Simply put, V betting with 88 will deny more equity from Hero’s range compared to betting QQ

When we bet, the Big Blind will fold some hands in his range (such as the weakest A-highs and Q-highs, plus the lower high card hands like T9).

When we hold QQ, those hands have extremely little chance to win the pot (they need to hit runner runner straights, flushes, trips or two-pair). Additionally, by checking we give him the chance to bluff on later streets or hit a pair lower than QQ that will pay us off. On the other hand…

When we hold 88, those hands have significant equity to draw out on us. For instance, QT offsuit has 27% equity against our 88 on the K♦ 6♥ 4♣ board. Forcing our opponent to fold a hand with 27% equity is a victory for us. To put this into perspective, the nut flush draw (A♥ 6♥) has roughly the same equity against top set (K♣ K♦) on a K♥ 9♥ 7♠ board.

Just a further note on above, in most scenarios QQ is still cbet at a fairly high frequency but 88 is cbet almost always.

When we bet, we make them fold a lot of hands that have solid equity against our hand, thus denying their chance to improve to a better pair than ours. It also denies them the chance to bluff us out of the pot when a scary card comes on the turn or river (and there are a lot more scary cards for 88 than QQ).

So betting 88 is much more important than betting QQ in this spot, even though 88 is a weaker hand.

Very well put Oldsilver. On this dry board and taking into consideration relative stack sizes, other than big pairs and possible sets, what should V's other c-back range consist of? Personally, I couyld definitely see AK (possibly KQ) as c-backs as they don't need to deny much equity. Also A-hihg w/o backdoor FD might be checked at some frequency? (I think I barrel all my A highs, but maybe check if I know V will x/r bluff here).
