If they folded to your raise it was likely a dry well, no clubs or sets or big pairs to be had. If you flat call, the next thing you know somebody goes runner-runner and you've lost a stack. Don't want to get too fancy with a vulnerable hand in a multi-way pot.
if it's a multi-way pot and you're in position, you can go along for the ride now and then with a crap hand. In fact you should. But if you make a habit of it you will lose a lot of chips.
