FT 9handed UTG w/ AJo. 20BB left (7th place) FT 9handed UTG w/ AJo. 20BB left (7th place)

Tricky spot because I have all 8 players behind, most of whom have me covered.

Blind and antes represent 2.5 BB and a 12.5% return on my 20BB starting stack. Odds of someone having a better hand (JJ+, AQ/AK) are ~ 20% and I expect that all of those hands will raise or call my all-in.

9th place is $350, first place is close to $3K.

The choices seem to be fold or raise 2.5BB.

Depends on the table. Almost always folding AT. Almost always raising AQ. Fold is my default unless table is super tight.

9-handed live I usually open this hand (10 handed it's a turbo muck). Being at an FT though it's not worth it. ICM.

Based on all the Twitch pros I watch win 10k every weekend, I think almost all insta fold that with 20bb simply based on position alone, whereas several would shove it from the cutoff forward.

It turned out to be my last hand in this event as well.

I opened 2.5BB, someone flatted with AK here and the flop brought an ace.

How can you people say what is best here ? We don’t even know if is an online MTT, a live one ? The buy in ? No info on players at the table ?
In a vacuum we have good blockers to go for a steal x2,2 and go from there (to nitty to fold , unless I have reasons to do so ) , also since we are the short stack at FT , ICM doesn’t affect us that much (I see a lot mistakes that short stack do , that play way to tight in this spots, and I think it should be the opposite imo )

Which of those factors are relevant? UTG with 8 players behind, we have no betting information from the players in front of us.

Regardless of format or buyin amount, we have a 20% chance that someone has us dominated and almost no chance of scaring off the dominating hands (possible exception of AQ).

FWIW - The subject line indicates we are in 7th (of 9), not the short stack.

The lesson I take from this hand is the relatively high chance that we are dominated with so many players still to act. In the future in this spot, I'll probably fold pre.

How can you be at FT and have no info in players ?
Is hard to give a good answer to your question , with no info on others ... like, do we cover SB/BB ? Does the players behind are good/aggro?
And ofc it matters the format or buy-in (in live MTT’s players tend to be more passive/weak, where online , players are more aggressive/good etc obv depends on buy-in also )
