Your friends idea is good also. If you think villian will call and fold on flops he doesn’t connect with, the stop and go is a solid play. Just make sure you bet enough you have a pot sized bet on the flop so your villian can fold and you have fold equity.
When I was coached for online mtts, I was told to do this at times. You typically wanna bet like 1/3 of your stack pre where you will get flatted and you can have 2/3 of your stack left after to rip a pot sized bet in (all-in).
I prefer jamming pre as your sizing is goin to be really odd. You have to raise to like 6-8 bbs pre and jam all flops. I feel bad villians will flat this sizing and call if they hit any part of flop. I like jamming more pre as your opponent can’t rip on you pre. Also you pick up 2.5 bbs. It sucks if your opponent somehow flats jq and calls on a board that they hit when you jam. I feel you get folds of hands such as jq when you rip 20 bbs pre. The 2.5 bbs is big during this part of the tourny. Taking a few spots like this late in an mtt without showdown is crucial and can really help you build your stack without significant risk.
