This is an interesting hand that a friend posted in a group chat. He only gave a pretty brief description of position, bets etc, but I still found the spot to be pretty unusual. I'll try my best to recreate the hand as I see it.

Villain 1: Approx 100bb. Middle aged asian who plays well, and aggressively in the right spots.

Hero: approx 100bb. Unknown playstyle. Lets assume slightly conservative.

Pre-Flop

Villain opens from early or mid position, standard open. Folds to hero on btn with 99, who 3bets 3x. Folds to villain who calls.

Flop

J97 . Pot approx 20bb.

Villain checks, hero cbets 1/3rd pot. Villain Check raises 20-25bb.

Hero???

how is this interesting?? We have middle set in a 3bet pot on a super wet board 100bb eff. We are getting it in.

Seems like a cooler that he lost and wants reassurance thats its just a cooler.

3betting 99 btn v ep is on the looser side as well, so your read of hero seems off as well.

Yeah, the only intersting thing is the 3! against EP open. What's the plan against a 4!? -- I guess it's gotta be fold. So flat is much bett IP here against EP open.

I think this hero would be shoving this flop. You have a drawy board and there are a lot of cards on the turn that can kill the action. If the turn comes and it's an 8 or T or a club.

I would probably flat call pre. I would cbet larger on the very wet board. 4! shove flop. You have 3rd nuts and lots of outs against 1st nuts. Villain can have all sorts of combo draws.

Ooh a set. Here are my thoughts on whether we should go for it now or wait it out like a tiger in the bushes:

A couple of things I do not agree with in the video. You mention he could have AA/KK. That is pretty unlikely, as he should usually 4! those preflop. Also, it would probably be better to flat call the 1/3 pot cbet with those hands on this board.

I also do not like 3-betting the flop to like 60xBB leaving 1/3 pot behind. The shove should look weaker and it is unlikely villain is raise/folding this flop. You crush all but 2 made hands, but your win percentage is not huge against the kind of draws that would checkraise. You want to force them to fold (which is unlikely) or gii as a dog.

I slightly disagree regarding AA/KK not being in a flatting range from UTG. Early position 4bets tend to have an extremely narrow range, which would let a lot of UTG's 3betting comfortably fold, when they might otherwise cbet pretty frequently.

Everything else is pretty spot on.

3! is surely fine, we’re 100bb deep, iso IP
cbet size good
AA KK def there in random live V range once it’s guaranteed heads up - old dudes love to punish three betting young upstarts
Jam now

Agree with this assessment. I wouldn't like getting raised but i'm not folding.

I'd jam with these stack sizes and this board.
