I'm not entirely sure this goes here, but would it be possible to separate this forum by location or something of the sort? Either by region or state or group of states or something of the sort. Most people in this section are only concerned with the poker game listings and requests from their own region anyway, so people looking for a game in New York will not have any use of seeing listings for home games from California, for ex. I feel this suggestion has come up in the past, but yeah, sounds good?

I appreciate the suggestion, but I can't do anything without getting an admin involved. Moderators cannot create new subforums.

And while I could see the merit if we were doing a lot more volume, HGL only gets a handful of new posts each day. Plus, most game listing threads contain the name of the city in the title, and it only takes a second to search the forum for your city and find everything relevant for the last year or so.

Well, I do agree with you and I haven't been on these forums enough to notice the low stream of posts in here. I was just looking at my situation too largely before with having to look up games in Newport Orange County, Tustin, Irvine, near UCI, and UC Irvine individually, and I guess there really isn't that much overall. Just made sense to make it more reorganized, if we could get the right person in here to do the work.

Maybe I don't have the vision of what you are suggesting. In the US and Canada alone, that is a lot of sub-forums. I don't think doing it by state and province would do it. Most people don't want to drive 2 or 3 hours to play. Maybe 200+ sub-forums? That is far from likely.

And then there are the odd threads which are more global.

Could you split the difference and do regions? Midwest, Atlantic, etc.

Exactly.

Take a look at B&M. That forum has a single subforum for regional communities, and then each community is represented by a thread. This seems to work well enough, and B&M is a much higher traffic forum than HGL.

And while we don't enforce that type of structure here, it happens somewhat organically. People want their games to be easily found, so they list the city and/or region in the thread title. I think having dozens or even hundreds of regional subforums would be overkill, and there will always be the problem of game listings or other threads that don't fit neatly into one region.

And to be frank, another reason to avoid having subforums here is that it makes HGL moderation a little easier for eneely and myself. If we were to add city or even regional subforums, then we have to a) move all existing listings into the new subforums, and b) check each new listing and move it if it's in the wrong place.

If I saw a substantial benefit to the forum, I'd be happy to take the suggested changes to Mat or Bobo in spite of the little bit of extra moderating work that it would require. But I'm not sold on the benefit in a forum where, on average, 3-5 threads are created or updated each day. It just doesn't take that much time to scan new listings for regional relevancy, even if you only pop in once a week or so.

I didn't consider the excess work for moderators, since I've been a forum moderator before and understand the extra inconvenience with too many subforums, something I'm not trying to make happen. I guess it's alright to just leave it the way it is, considering that there's not too many threads coming in anyway.

And just as a FYI @ eneely, I wasn't looking to break it down by states since that's just way too extensive. Just regions like the West, etc. makes sense, as a way to make it a bit more organized. Just something in the middle of bunching up everything together and making 100 subforums.
