Hello. I'm looking for a few people in NYC who are interested in playing some micro/low stakes poker, specifically, .05/.10 - .25/.50 cash games. Another 2p2'er and I have been playing HU once every week or two for a while now and we'd like to get a few more people together to make it 4-6. We both live in Manhattan so that's where the game will be.

Small stakes games like this are fun if there's drinking involved. I hosted a .25-.50 NL game with fairly deep stacks for awhile, which sometimes evolved into 1/1. Nice and social. You'll probably find interested parties here, but you'd want to make sure there were others in your game outside of 2p2ers. No one wants to play in a rock garden.

I've been surprised at how hard it is to find people who want to play this low. You'd think with a few million people living in the vicinity at least a couple would dink around at NL10 or NL25. I'm only in NY for this school year and I only know a few people here so finding non 2p2ers is bit of a problem.

As far as the general attitude of the game, I think it'll depend on who responds. When we play HU (.05/.10) we do BS and have a few beers but we're still pretty serious. It'd probably be more social if we weren't both constantly involved in a hand. I'm not that interested in the money (easy to say when I've ran well) but I think of it more as a learning experience. We often discuss lines/hands and general poker related topics. If a few people who are less serious about the game are added, then I suppose the conversation would be less poker-based.

Try NL50 then with a max buy in of $75 or $100. It's still fun, but allows for a decent amount of money on the table.

You may want to try advertising on other websites like homepokergames.com, or ask people from school or the bar scene. 2p2ers are generally boring, lifeless people who sit at the tables like zombies (especially ones playing for a living or for a portion of their income). If you have a 7 handed game with yourself and 6 people from this site, it's not going to be very fun. The play will lead to the learning experience you're hoping for in terms of watching good play and discussing hands, but, on any given night the winners and losers will simply come down to who flops a set versus TPTK in a 3-bet pot - you're going to see mundane, by the book solid play all night. You need people to spice the action up.

Homepokergames.com would be a great place to list this type of game in NY now, since the only listings in the last several months there have been illegal underground games pretending to be "true home games"

If you post online, you might get a group of prospective players to meet somewhere public, a bar maybe, to get a feel for who fits for your game.

Also checkout meetup.com and facebook.

The sticky at the top of this forum has an article on finding players and games.

Hey, been reading the forums for years now, finally decided to register. Me and 5 of my buddies play .25/.50 almost every Saturday. Sometimes at my house in Yonkers, NY or in Englewood, NJ. Usually play 6 handed, would love to play more 9-10 handed. Manhattan is an easy commute for my buddies that live in NJ and myself. I could send you my facebook link. We would be down to play at you home game.

Felix.

I might be interested. Are you near downtown manhattan?

Alright, good to see some responses.

SonRK: will PM you if we do a 50-100NL game (almost certainly it will be 50NL)

ff3207: I'm interested both in having you guys down here and attending your existing game, but I'm not sure how feasible a 9-handed game is here in terms of space. We've been playing at the other guy's apartment; I know up to 6 is ok but beyond that I'm not sure. I sent you an email through here for the facebook link (can't do PMs without a certain number of posts) and will see if I can get him to chime in here about the seating capacity.

xtheyinx: location is 159th street, so not downtown

So I'm the other guy, FYI. I'm a pretty LAGgy player, so while I wouldn't hold myself out as the "live one," I would defnitely be spicing up the action if the game was too nitty (I used to CRUSH this other home game full of nits this way).

It would definitely have to be 50NL; I don't have have the cash to play higher. And I couldn't really comfortably host more than 6 (maybe 8 max) at the table and kitchen I have. My lease is up in April though, so we'll (my g/f and I) will be looking for a bigger place, so maybe then.

As he said, 159th St, so practically the Bronx .

Anything else?

I'd rather not be that specific on a public message forum, but it is on the west side.

I'd actually be interested in something like this, I used to have a similar game as aforementioned at my place or a friends place, sometimes 50NL sometimes 100NL. Whatever you do with the stakes is fine, I go to have fun, it generally costs me more in terms of travel and alcohol than I could ever make in the game anyway. But, see what you can do about mixing in non-2p2ers. I don't even care if they're bad players, just some people who don't conform to this site.

OK, I've been in contact with a couple people on here and tried to put together a last minute game last Saturday but it didn't work out.

2OutsNoProb, I'm not really sure what to say. I don't know the people who've contacted me on here yet so I can't comment on their personalities but at least one said he wasn't an online player if that makes a difference. I'm having a real problem putting a game of "normal" people together because I just don't have many avenues to meet people in my current situation. I'm actually a grad student at Penn State but for this school year I'm at a college here. I knew no one when I moved here and at the college there is no graduate program (no other grad students), and I'm not really comfortable asking any of my students to play (for one thing, it is a religious college and I'm not a member of their religion) and so for job/school the only thing even close to peers are 3 (1m, 2f) post-docs, all nonnative speakers who recently moved here from China. I've tried the one guy and he's not in; the girls really do not strike me as the type. I've also got 3 roommates but 2 of them are very distant (and 1 not here right now) and the one I do hang out with doesn't play poker. I generally don't go to the bar as it seems you either have to pay $8 for a beer somewhere decent or hit up a dive where the guy next to you is doing lines of coke off the bar, and in either case it's crowded as hell. Thus I've resorted to looking online for players/games. I've kept an eye on 2p2, craigslist, homepokergames.com, and meetup.com, but I haven't found much. I tried an add on CL but not a single person replied; an add on homepokergames would make sense- I guess I just didn't before because everything I saw was 1/2 and up. On meetup the only thing close was a home game with .25/.50 blinds but that was located quite a ways away in Queens, was held on a weeknight (doable but not optimal), and there was a $20 max initial buy in. I've also been looking for student organizations at the various universities around, but haven't found any contacts that way. Anyway, enough yacking- that is the situation, do you have any suggestions? Anyone who comes is certainly welcome to bring a friend or two.

It would be cool to have a game sometime this weekend (preferably Saturday). Who's up for it?

You didn't owe me any long description of why your situation doesn't enable you to find more players, I understand that garnering interest is tough. Continue to try homepokergames.com, ignore all the higher stakes listings, as none of them are true home games anyway. Posting a smaller stakes game is fine.

What I've done at a local bar in midtown east is get a game going with 3 or 4 people ($1-$2). Inevitably people see us playing and want to join in. It's a good time.

There are a few problems though. The bar manager is only up for it at certain times - they think they could get busted for it even though they're not taking a cut. A bar in NY not only has to follow the law - they have to remain above suspicion. Petty fascism. Another problem is probably the same for any homegame type situation. There's no "floor" or professional dealers. Disputes are not fun. And you never know what kind of knuckleheads might be joining your game. Haven't ever had any serious problems with this - but it's a worry. So I only get this game going on rare occasions.

If your comfortable playing $.50/$1 is $1-$2 that much of a stretch? The bus for AC leaves every .5 hour...

Good luck

Lol I'm not parking the Benz there. The vw maybe someone will steal it. Putting the listing on hpg might be dangerous but this is for pennies. Thr games is at your house/apt? Conference room at an office might be a good idea or a hotel meet in the conference room as long as it's not occupied.

Who is we? Who are you even talking to? This isn't even your thread or your game, and no one here has indicated that they have an office with a conference room that is available for games.

The guy who made the thread offered to host the game at his place. That's fine. Home Poker Games is fine for posting small stakes home games.

Thats up to each individual person to decide. The games are heavily raked, and right out there in the open, just waiting to get busted.

Yeah it does seem risky?

I think Miso was saying people should meetup and use a hotel conference room.

They would probably kick us out, I would have to assume
